“Felix,” she says, lifting warm brown eyes up to his. He
focuses on her chapped lips, and all he can think of is how she tasted -how
soon he can fit his own there again. “I’m not going back to the Box.”
His heart gives a painful thud, and for a second he can’t
speak. He can hardly breathe.
“Not as long as I exist,” he tells her in a strangled
voice. “I’ll take you to Mercury first.”
“I’m not going to Mercury with you, no-brains,” she
replies, her voice a croak. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”
Felix laughs. “Keep talking like that and I might drop you,” he says.
“Keep talking like that and I might punch you,” she replies.
Her breath catches.
“How do you feel?” he asks her immediately. “Are you ok?”
“Of course I’m not ok,” she says and he grits his teeth.
“I’m mad,” she adds.
“What?” he says, taken by surprise, and she tries to laugh
but ends up choking on a rasping breath.
“I’ve only just found you,” she says as soon as she can
breathe, her voice the sound of sadness. “And already I’m leaving.”
Felix stumbles, even though he wasn’t walking.
He settles her in his arms, noticing the teardrops that
are sparkling on her lashes. “Astra…” he begins, but he can’t go on.
