As I lined up for my flight to the East Coast on Friday, two young women almost accidentally boarded our plane. At the last second, they realized they were one line over from their correct gate, which was boarding for Las Vegas. They barely made it, but the gate agent let them board. They seemed like country music fans who had been “pre-gaming” at the airport bar, getting ready for a fun weekend in Vegas. Now I’m wondering if they survived the horror that rained down on the tens of thousands of people who just wanted to see their favorite musicians in concert and have a good time.

You can clink the link at the top to donate to
the Clark County Commission Chair Steve Sisolak’s GoFundMe fundraiser to “be used to
provide relief and financial support to the victims and families of the
horrific Las Vegas mass shooting.”

You can go to this link to find ways to donate blood
to help the victims. As the article states, “You can still help if you
are in another part of the country; your blood
might not make it all the way to Las Vegas, but it can go to a hospital
near you, freeing up supplies somewhere else.” A friend posted that the
Las Vegas mayor said if you donate blood in L.A. tonight or tomorrow it
will likely end up in Las Vegas—I haven’t been able to confirm that
yet, but the above quote makes it seem to be a worthwhile way to help
regardless.

I’m saddened, sickened, and angered… but this kind of horror is increasingly “normal” in our country: the largest mass shooting in modern U.S. history; the 273rd mass shooting in the U.S. so far in 2017, with 59 dead and over 500 injured; another shooter from the group that has committed the most mass shootings in the U.S. since 1982—white males.

Shaun King’s article on the "White Privilege of the Lone Wolf Shooter” is poignant and well worth your time to read. And take a look at the graphics in the Guardian’s piece “1,516 Mass Shootings in 1,735 Days: America’s Gun Crisis – In One Chart.”
