Miss Simone, I've been doing a series of posts of strong female characters on Tumblr because i feel although we need more female representation we need to acknowledge the ones that do exist. But I've been told by people that these characters don't matter b

Not at all.

Look, I don’t think mathematical parity matters at all. I’d rather have 25% of the AMAZING characters that people love than 50% of forgettable empty outfits.

Quality is most important, relevance, characters of a compelling nature.

It’s fine to point out disparity, it’s good to talk about what fiction CAN include, rather than what it does at this exact moment. And again, my argument has always been to ADD to what’s out there, not to take away things that people love.

I have created lots and lots of new characters, some stuck, some didn’t, that’s a struggle that I have chosen like a thousand comics creators before me. I’m fine with that.  I think it’s okay to say, hey, there is a real character gap over here.  That’s worth doing. I don’t believe we are anywhere near the mountain top yet.

I love what’s already out there, too. I just want to see it expanded to include as many people as possible. And that’s a permanent work in progress, really.

I’m okay with that.
