Double-Feature Fridays

“…the Good Man is the True Man.  My point…the True Man is true because he is operating at the summit of his potential; the Good Man is good for the same reason.”--Calder Willingham, END AS A MAN
Alan and I love movies.  Last weekend we saw two films and I said, “You know, we should makE it a habit to see two movies on Friday.  We can call it Double-Feature Fridays!”

And so, we tried to make it happen.   Last weekend was well worth it.   We watching Robin Williams, Jeff Fridges and Mercedes Ruehl in a film called THE FISHER KING.  It kept our interest.  It was about a former radio DJ who was suicidally despondent because of a terrible mistake he had made in his past.   Then he finds redemption in helping a deranged homeless man who was an unwitting victim of that mistake.  It made it interesting to see how it connected.
The other film I liked better called RAMBLING ROSE.  I’m a fan of Laura Dern and her mom (Diane Ladd) played in the film also.   I’m into a good drama.  It was based on a novel by Calder Willingham.  Laura Dern’s character (Rose) exudes sexuality as she battles temptation.  I enjoyed it.
This weekend we chose DECEIVED, a suspenseful thriller starring Goldie Hawn.  The other was an Independent Film directed by Gus Van Sant starring two 'up and coming' new actors:  River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves.   They played hustlers trying to find their way in life.  I suppose that happens a lot these days.   I think when you're in your twenties everyone is searching and striving for that right road.  The question is which road to take.  It takes only one slightly wrong decision to mess it all up.  Then, if you're lucky you get back on track. I preferred the suspenseful-thriller starring Goldie because it seemed more complete while MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO left me wondering.   So who knows, as time passes I may see more emotional and mental value in the latter.
Paloma sent me a postcard of a PORSCHE 959 sportscar.
Balaruc-Les-Bains27, September 1991Dear Michael,I can’t but you the real thing (PORSCHE) but at least now you have the picture!   Pretty nice, isn’t it?  I wouldn’t mind having one.  I won’t write very much.  I’m lazy and I have no inspiration today.  I just wanted to let you know that I think about you. What are you doing? My brother is going back to the States after 2-months in France and Spain.  On the 4th of July I didn’t get to see him.  He wanted to come but he just had two days left.  It was too expensive for just 2-days because he had to go back to Amsterdam.  Oh well…we’ll probably go to New Orleans next winter.Write me…Love, Paloma
“What is all this stuff about liking and not liking?“The fact is, what I like usually likes me: what I don’t like usually doesn’t like me.  I’m not being conceited.  It turns out that way all the time.  Why is this?   Because since I was twelve years old when I got my stepmother I’ve seen to it nobody decides whether they like me.  I decide whether I like them!”--Calder Willingham, THE END AS MAN
