How Big is Too Big?

While I’m not going to get in the whole does sex make a book romance debate (which I know a lot of people have an opinion on), I think everyone can agree that great sex scenes can be hard to write at times. That is because you want them to be a fantasy, but still based on some type of reality.  Which often leads me to wonder about one thing: when writing about a love interest’s anatomy, how big is too big?

I’ve read a lot of m/m and gay romance, and most of them pretty much stay in the 8 to 9 inch range. That’s the one I use as well in my writing, since it is big enough to entice, but also still believable in possiblity. Then there are those that really go for it and head out to 11 to 13 inches, which to me, seems a bit much. I know that those monsters really do exist, but it’s not something that I can easily picture when I read about them in a book. I also feel that size isn’t the only part of a great fantasy, and needs to be combined with intense descriptions in order to make the most impact. But that’s just my opinion, and others may feel differently. I guess it really is a matter of taste.

What do you think? Does size play into the fantasy, or is it only a small part (sorry, I had to pun)?
