Biomedical researchers need human eggs for experiments that could lead to targeted therapies for a wide range of diseases.
Researchers typically use eggs harvested from women donors. But there are barriers to obtaining egg cells:
In many states, researchers are not allowed to compensate egg donors, while fertility clinics pay them well
The medical retrieval process requires the donor to take hormone injections for several days and then undergo a surgical procedure
Now, researchers are considering creating female human/pig hybrids, or chimeras whose ovaries could produce human eggs to be used in research.
Is there a moral or ethical reason not to do this? A bioethicist at Kings College says no.
What do you think?
