Hurricanes, a medieval queen, and William Wallace

Let’s hope and pray that Irma will be the last major hurricane of the season. Please help the residents of Florida and let’s not forget the people in the Caribbean islands that suffered, too, from Irma.
For Americans, September 11th will always call to mind the most devastating terrorist assault upon our country. I find it hard to believe that sixteen years have passed since then, for those are memories that will never fade.
In medieval history, September 11th, 1161 was the date of death of a very interesting woman who is not very well known today—Melisende, Queen of Jerusalem in her own right, strong-willed widow of Fulk of Anjou, our Henry II’s grandfather. For anyone who’d like to learn more of her unusual history, I recommend Sharan Newman’s biography, Defending the City of God. September 11th was also the date in 1297 of the battle of Stirling Bridge, in which William Wallace defeated an English army. It was dramatized in Braveheart—well, except for the bridge and the battle tactics.

Asghar Abbas Wow this is all so very interesting . Didn't know about the historical September 11 events . I'll up look the recommended book . I'm always interested in unusual women in history that we don't normally know about or women that get lost in the shuffle .

Sharon Melisende was quite interesting, Asghar. She even fought a civil war against her own son. Sharan's book is a biography, but I think there may also have been at least one novel about her.

Asghar Abbas I'd love to read a novel about her . War against her own son, now that's not something you come across every day . Even that is unquie . I can't help but wonder about her name and whether Martin used it as a homage or maybe that's a different spelling variation .

Sharon I wondered that, too, Asghar; about the name of the Red Woman, I mean.

Asghar Abbas Same . Happy that it's a real name and glad you brought my attention to this historical figure . Makes me wonder what kind of library you must have and all the historical books in it :)

David Elkin Loved the movie but it was really bad history . What would your recommend for a bio of William Wallace (or a novel). Hope you are feeling better and the bloody dragon is sleeping.

Sharon I am sorry, David; no books come to mind. I've never done extensive research on Wallace. If you like, I can ask my readers on my Facebook pages. They are very good at things like this.

David Elkin sounds good

Mardi Anytime I think of Scotland writers, Nigel Tranter is the name on the top of my list. He wrote "The Wallace". One of my favorite authors.
