I’m thinking about my dad today on what would have been his 75th birthday. On his last birthday, in 2002, he wrote this little message on the back of a piece of art my parents bought when we lived in Okinawa. As a little girl, I was fascinated by the mask. I wrote stories about it. Jenge was his nickname for me. He was the only one who called me that, and when he died I remember thinking, “No one will ever call me that again.”
