I'm typing this while looking out upon the Roman fort of Vindolanda. I'm based here for the next two weeks while I volunteer on the archaeological site.
This is my second time volunteering here, and I can say with utmost honesty that I have loved every moment, every shovelful.
The whole experience is surreal, you're handling animal bones and leather shoes which are 2,000 years old, and you can't help but wonder about their lives and imagine up what life was life.
My time at Vindolanda will help form the direction the sequel to
The Last Letter and I can almost feel my fingers itching to type...but they will have to wait until after my trip to India in October, which will finalise some of the plot lines I have wandering around in my brain.
There can be no better way to conduct research than sitting hunched over a wheelbarrow painstakingly pawing through anaerobic mud.
