There Is Still No One Like You

I was talking…a few days ago (to one) who was complaining about how memories, even your most precious ones, fade surprisingly quickly.   But I don’t go along with that.   The memories I value most, I don’t see them ever fading.--Kazuo Ishiguro, NEVER LET ME GO
Birda wrote me a note about running into Michael Miller in Alameda who said he was a friend of mine (which is true—I’ve known him since he was a kid as his older sister, Sue, I’ve known since 9th grade).   He was his usual social self with Birda as I guess they were having a couple of drinks at a local dive in Alameda.   Birda included a photo of a bike image she came across that made her laugh.  It made me laugh also.
In the back of the photo she wrote, “Miller made me laugh…but there is still no one like you!”  B.B.  Those words charmed me much.
I was recovering nicely from my appendectomy and Alan escaped to Hawaii with his daughters (Lauren, age 11, and Carrie, age 8).   On July 31st, Alan slyly found a Hawaiian gal postcard and mailed it to me.  It was a delight to receive it.   Alan wrote:
7/31/91Michael,Isn’t she my type?   We just ate (or pigged out) at the GOLDEN DRAGON (fantastic Chinese Restaurant in Honolulu).   It is 9:45 (12:45AM L.A. time) and the kids just went to sleep.  Tomorrow it’s the beginning of total relaxation.Alan
I didn’t realize how much I’d miss Alan.   It’s good that he had this time alone with the girls now during the divorce that is still in progress.   When will it ever end?
I’m thinking it is good that I’m jobless now because it’s perfect for appendectomy recovery.   I can read.  I can watch TV.  I can call mom.  I can write letters.  I can ponder what job I should look for to make me happy.
“Time will tell.”That’s my line.  One never knows whats in store on that road ahead.  I guess it's just like Agent 007.  He never knows his next assignment.  I can relate.
“It would cast a shadow over our lives for a time, of course,” he admitted.--Emily Hahn,
