Paula is a patient, gentle young soul on the lookout for love...

One Week, L.S. Bergman:

“The Fritz was packed already. The Cafe was near to their old school, and the crowd seemed to take shifts. The afternoon was the student crowd, which rapidly gave way to the after-work rush come five. Meandering her way to the back, Paula knew Tawnia would be there. She always kept to time, and had a knack of getting the same table. Their usual, near to the window at the back, with full scoping potential. Tawnia loved to gossip. People and faces. She was never not in the know. And, there was nothing like analysing body language to prove the buzz of some story she'd caught wind of.

"Look at you, looking all sophisticated," Tawnia said, getting up to hug her friend, dressed in a form-fitting red jumpsuit and blindingly white sneaks.

"Hey boo. You think? Made an effort this morning. Dressed to impress," Paula chuckled, pulling out her chair and slipping down.

"You look great," Tawnia said, signalling to the bartender, the one she'd been working on as apparently being officially moved from 'cute' to 'darn fine'. Paula didn't remember who she was exactly on about, and had no intention of turning to check out the latest object of Tawnia's desire, because the woman had many flavours of the month. She looked satisfied, the dude understanding her gesture, had her settling back to check-in with Paula,
"The usual yeah?"

Paula nodded. Her ginger tea with a touch of lemon and a hint of honey had become her new law.

"I don't know how you keep it up," Tawnia sighed, sinking her teeth into a healthy bite of a pink frosted dough-nut.

Paula giggled, "you get used to it. Fads change. But don't worry 'bout that. Whassup wid you woman?"

"Tonight is what's up, and the fact that you ain't comin'," she twisted up her mouth, one cheek slightly bulged at the side with her sugary treat.

Paula smiled, "another time, a'ight? Today was kinda tiring. I just wanna kick-back and sleep." Talking about the gym with Tawnia never went down well, so she decided to skip it. It wasn't a worthwhile excuse to bat in front of a friend who had the body to die for, irrespective of the crap she stuffed in her mouth.

"Yeah, right," Tawnia scoffed under her breath before straightening her back just as a large ginger tea was placed in front of Paula. "Well, thank you, Miles," Tawnia batted her eyelids, her voice extra-sing and song.

Paula's ears tweaked. The name certainly rang a bell.

Paula looked up and met warm smiling chocolate eyes. It was Miles, Miles from School Miles. Now obviously barman-at-The-Fritz-Miles.

"Hi," she said shyly.

"Hi," he said, their eyes locked, registering surprise more than anything else.

"You know each other?" Tawnia asked, batting her eyelids and running a hand slowly through her curly locks in a flirtatious manner.

"Kinda," Paula smiled.

"How yah mean? Classmate?" he teased, as Paula grimaced at the memory of maths class, to name but one. "I told you you'd get through," he said, stuffing his hands in his pockets and rocking back slightly on his heels in admiration.

"If only I could've been so sure. I had to work my ass off. Not everyone has your kind of brains."

"Maybe, but you girls ain't doin' too badly in other categories," he smiled wickedly, which pleased the hell out of Tawnia, but made Paula flush. "Can I get you something else?"

"Yes, I'd love one of those green salads," Paula said, pointing at the neatly packed glass shelves.

"Alright, I'll get it sent right over. Duty calls so laters, yeah?"

"Yeah, thanks. Laters," Paula said, fiddling with the pendant of her chain.

Tawnia started to fan herself dramatically, nibbling on the tip of her thumb-nail, watching as he sauntered back to the bar with a shake of his head and a soft chuckle. She wasn't exactly being discrete.

"God girl, you didn't tell me you knew him? What I wouldn't do to get closer," she sighed dreamily.

"Go for it. Miles is cool."

"Think I got a chance?"

"No clue, but judging from the way he looked at you just now? I'd say, yeah, you do. The only problem is you have too many 'chances' going on ... one day you're gonna have to choose woman. I mean, Flavian, David, Clive, Miles ..."

Tawnia grimaced. "Please don't bring up your brother's name. That doesn't count 'cause we're connected at some deeper level. My heart is still hurting, and Clive is still being … Clive."

Cut the dramatics, Tawnia was the one who dropped Clive, but 'whatever'. Paula chuckled, taking a sip of her tea to soothe the cloud of fickleness currently hovering around her.” One Week © L.S.Bergman 2017
