Battle of the Newbie Author

So I’ve taken the plunge and set off to accomplish one of my to-do-before-I’m-50 bucket list items.... write and publish a novel!

Boy has it whacked me squarely between the eyes! It’s an unchartered battlefield of maneuvering through minefields of social media and bloggers in an almost futile attempt to gain sales!

What comes first? The chicken or the egg?

To sell you need reviews... to get reviews you need to sell? The mind boggles!

Overnight I’ve become a Social Media Butterfly, which has become my almost full time job, I have to say.

Campaign after campaign, giveaways and countdown deals... and only 2 sales?

Feel free to jump in at this point fellow Goodreads friends! #SOS

Jim Vuksic Writing a novel was just one of four items included in the bucket list which my late wife insisted I create upon retiring from a 33-year management career in 2001. She knew that an idea for a story had been fermenting inside my head for years.

It took me 14 months to produce a completed, polished manuscript, only to discover during the publishing process that it was not yet polished nor complete. An additional 2 months of learning from and working with a copy editor, conceptual editor and layout design artist finally produced a commercially viable book. It was released August 9, 2011.

Six years later, I look back and evaluate that decision to write a novel. It has only sold 1,029 units to-date (485 paperback books - 480 e-books - 36 audio books on CD - 28 audio downloads), a commercial failure by professional standards. Even so, it was worth all the time and effort. Since I never had the slightest anticipation that it would become commercially successful, I was not disappointed. It proved to be an extremely satisfying and self-fulfilling learning experience. I am now focused upon completing the remaining items in that bucket list and look forward to equally satisfying experiences.
