I like how Gail Simone keeps living down to my expectations
….kay. I'm pissed now. I just. I can't.
So I get up this morning and I'm doing my morning rounds on my dashboard and I see this. And at first I'm like: hahah wtf is this, this can't be for real. And then I click the friggen link.
…what the flying Grayson, they're serious.
Steph's book was going to be canceled regardless? …um. …yeah, didn't see that coming and for how rabid half her fans have been—towards me, even—that…I don't believe that. I just don't. I'm possibly considered a minority because I am not a fan of her. A minority. And wasn't she winning in the "Female character you're going to miss most in the reboot" poll? I don't remember, but, she was beating Peej…AND Donna, for that matter. Yeah. Down at my comic book shop, every Wednesday, all the new Batgirl issues were missing. And they wouldn't be back for the whole week because every time Neil restocked, people would friggen pounce them. Heck, and the trades disappeared just as quickly, too. Steph's issues were harder to catch than friggen Batman and Robin AND Red Robin. The only thing Batfamily-related that was harder to find was Gates of Gotham (PROBABLY BECAUSE CASS WAS FINALLY BACK, HMM).
Look at this, a non-Steph-fan is standing up for her. What does that tell you, DC?
Also: on the forums there, it was mentioned that in Batgirl #1 it was NEVER mentioned that Babs was Oracle. …so you guys are going to constantly be throwing "The Killing Joke" in our faces, but, you're not going to say ANYTHING ABOUT ORACLE.
What. The HECK. Is THAT.
I know it's the first issue and all that, but. Um. I THINK that's kind of IMPORTANT.
…hang on, taking a moment to scroll through the threads a bit more.

—Oh wait, here's some vague mention about Oracle (fan mention, not in the comic). And considering it's been mentioned Babs was without her legs for 3 years, 'Oracle' must have happened during that time period. …I still don't understand why Steph would give up the cowl (unless she never had it…um) or why Babs would go BACK to being Batgirl….like…it's been 3 years. And…I would think during those 3 years you'd go through SOME KIND of metamorphosis. I mean. Seriously. Especially since in DCU, Babs didn't leave the house AT ALL until Jason's funeral. That was the first time she came out of the house. It took THAT. To get her out. 3 years ISN'T that much time, guys. In the grand scheme of things it just ISN'T. Like I said, I'm still a yearling with comics and there are areas of the Batfamily I haven't gotten the chance to explore that much, but, I think 3 years for "The Killing Joke" and Oracle and then suddenly….BATGIRL —instead of inventing a new identity for herself — all over again is jumping the shark. A very big shark.
I don't know. I know I'm not 100% familiar with Babs' character and the most exposure I've had to her was Arkham Asylum and whenever she'd appear in Cass' Batgirl run (and she was in a few of the Steph comics I browsed), but…I dunno. From other people's posts on her, that just doesn't seem very Babs like. Also: she apparently wasn't wearing glasses ever in the issue. …*stares*
But yeah. These forums irk me more than I can express—everyone seems so happy to have Babs back in the cowl, I don't… . Maybe I'm biased about the situation to begin with. Maybe I'm stubborn and just want to hate the book. Maybe it's just because I haven't actually touched the friggen thing. But. Geeze. And Gail? Showing up in the forums? …that's kinda…not cool, dude. I know you're the author and everything but…lingering is fine….just…yeah.
I should probably stop talking before I piss someone off with my biased and inexperienced rantings. I'll be going by the comic book store tomorrow afternoon, so. Anyone who follows me on Twitter will probably be getting a glimpse of me reading crap and chances are I'll be posting my own opinions on tumblr later Friday night.
So yeah. Shutting up about my immediate thoughts. And screw these forums, I quit.
I don't think you're biased or inexperienced at all. It seems like you're irked and you make a good point.
I don't know if everyone was happy in that thread…but it's one of a multiple threads on the board, this is the only one where the weird rule about Cass and Steph was put in place. We discussed them both concurrently in the other threads.
It might not be cool to join in on review threads, it can definitely soak up the air. I'll give it some thought.
CBR is kind of a special case, I've been going there for like a decade and a half, long before I turned pro, before it was even called CBR. I had a board there for like ten years or something. I'm used to it, it's comfortable. I would say some posters might feel weird posting with me there but even on that thread there were lots of naysayers.
I appreciate what you're saying about your store, but I posted the overall sales numbers for Batgirl downthread, and Secret Six was even lower. It happens that some stores can REALLY sell a book where other stores don't even try. Geoff Johns' comic store sold a TON of Secret Six, others don't even keep a copy for the rack. It kinda sucks.
