I generally prefer reading “architect” books to “seat of the pants”, which often gives the making-it-up-as-I-go impression, but Tad Williams has always done a good job of avoiding this despite using that approach. Still, this would be way too stressful a method for me to try in his shoes. What if it fails to all come together this time, or I think too late of a great idea that I didn't sufficiently plan for and have to regretfully drop it?
