Since I don't have a blog address of my own I thought it logical to use the one goodreads has right here!
Some of you know I recently had a guest spot on All Male Romance's blog. (
http://allmaleromance.blogspot.com/?z... - underneath the entry Jaxx has posted now.) That was the first one I wrote to introduce myself to the world and talk about my writing. I haven't had a lot of time on the web yet.
For a long time, I was writing my book! It began in 2009 , was completed in 2010, and published in 2011. Much editing was done. I don't know about all writers but it is hard to give up words. Was it Stephen King who said it was like giving up his children? (I don't know.) I write things and when I have to consider cutting a line from dialogue or even just description, I find I have to cut and paste it to a saved document "just in case" I want to use those words again. Is this futile? Probably. During the editing of When Love is Not Enough I quickly learned that I didn't NEED to do that. The words were in my head. Maybe not in the same order as I may have written them the first time, but I am learning not to fear losing something awesome! If it was an awesome sentence to begin with, then I wouldn't be cutting it out! Would I? It is the awesome sentences that stay. The lame ones go. The unnecessary ones get hacked! Chopping out redundancy helps shape a better story. I KNOW I am redundant! I see it every time I go to edit something. Have you ever reread a scene and thought, "Oo, I'll add this..." and as you read you discover the same sentence you just added a few sentences down the page? I ALREADY knew I needed to include the thoughts they were just in a different order! I am crazy that way. This happens to me ALL the time! I also tend to use the SAME words over and over. If I had a dollar for every time I used the word "definitely"!!! (yes, that is so cliché) So, my advice for today, if you write, is NOT to worry about it. If you cut words out ("cull" as it were) then cut them! You can write them again if you decide to. The words are in your head. You just have to trust your instinct!
That is all I have for now.
