Stand Up and Sing!: Pete Seeger, Folk Music and the Path to Justice (+a #Giveaway!)

Today I am very excited to share and review (and giveaway!) Stand Up and Sing! Pete Seeger, Folk Music and the Path to Justice by Susanna Reich

Pete Seeger

Many of us have heard or musician Pete Seeger as a folk singer how made a name for himself in the late 1950s. He was someone who was born with music in his bones. During the Great Depression, Pete saw poverty and adversity that forever shaped his worldview. Instead of defeating him, it drove him to find a way to give back and make a difference in the world. Then it happened.

He received is first banjo. Through the plucking of the strings and singing folk songs young Pete discovered the power of music in bringing people together for a greater good. Using his gifts throughout his life he encouraged others to rally and rise up during trying times like the Vietnam War or cleaning up the Hudson River. He even met, and was influenced by, Dr. Martin Luther King.

Pete endured many hardships in his life including being blacklisted for being “unAmerican.” He always persevered, followed his heart and used his music to inspire and call attention to the injustices in the world.

Stand Up and Sing! Pete Seeger, Folk Music and the Path to Justice by Susanna Reich  is a richly illustrated picture book that talks about beig brave, standing up for others and speaking the truth. For parents, there is a wonderful foreword in this book from Pete’s long-time friend, Pete Yarrow (The “Peter” in the singing group Peter, Paul and Mary).

About The Author

Inspired by the rhythms of American folk music, author Susanna Reich brings the life of Pete Seeger to a new generation in Stand Up and Sing! Pete Seeger, Folk Music and the Path to Justice.

This moving account of his life also celebrates his legacy and shows kids everywhere that no cause is too small and no obstacle is too large if you stand up and SING!

Something To Do

To “blow off steam” from a sometimes stressful life, Pete loved to sail. His passion for sailing, boats and Mother Earth is also what inspired him to protest and take action on the pitiful state of the Hudson River in the 1960s. To re-create a boat like the one Pete used to clean up the Hudson, my son and I  loved the idea of recycle, reuse, re-purposed one. To create your own recycle boat, make a raid on the craft and recycling bin and see what kind of sea-worthy vessel you can create!

Dragons are real

SO…what if I told you that all of the fairy tales, myths and legends that have been told about dragons over the years are WRONG. What if I told you that Dragons are indeed Real and that they are different than you’ve ever imagined?

This fairly true story is based on the author’s childhood friendship with a REAL live Dragon; a very special Dragon that she and her brother spent two magical summers with.

As readers turn the pages and learn the truth about Dragons, they will see that the fiercest beasts in known history can actually be the best of friends. It’s a lesson in finding companionship in the most unusual of places. Dragons are Real is a magical book filled with stunning illustrations and hints that dragon are indeed all around us
