5 Flavors of a Lifesaver
Every weekday at 4:30 PM, I’d position myself on the sidewalk and stand watch.
His arrival was as predictable as the persistent tick tock of Mickey Mouse watch on my tiny left wrist.
He’d guide the beat up red Pinto into the same single parking space and climb out with a sloppy smile on his face. A kiss and hug later, he’d dig into his shirt pocket and pull out a prize.
My greedy hands grabbed the packet of 5-flavored lifesavers and gobbled them down in less than 10 minutes. Pineapple was my favorite.
He’d shake his head in disbelief and caution me to slow down.
It’s hard to believe how quickly the sweetness has slipped through my fingers. Today, we laid my lifesaver to rest. He lived and loved with a quiet, steady strength.
For the last several weeks, I’ve immersed myself in the study of a beautiful love story found in the pages of the Old Testament. Just this morning, I realized how my Abuelo Romeo mirrored the example of Boaz. His Ruth was named Lela, and he sheltered her under his stalwart wing for 69 years.
I want to share with you a portion of the tantalizing treats I tasted right at their kitchen table. Every morsel is a hearty meal.

Persistent Diligence
The most delectable meals are prepared under a slow, constant flame. Season the pot daily without fail for savory fare.
The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. (Proverbs 21:5, NIV)
Consistent Integrity
Resist the temptation to take shortcuts. Skimping on wholesome, healthy ingredients never satisfies.
A poor person who walks in his integrity is better than one who is perverse in his ways even though he is rich. (Proverbs 28:6, NLT)
Courageous Obedience
Sow seeds of righteousness, and you will cultivate flavorful fruit. Tending the soil of your heart is the secret to a sweet life.
If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land. (Isaiah 1:19, NKJV)
