S1E13: Sneaking into Ecuador, Pollywogs to Shellbacks, Slow Boat Sailing

After being kicked out of Esmeraldes, Ecuador by the Coast Guard, the Slow Boat crew goes rogue and searches for fuel in Sua Beach and Atacames, Ecuador without checking in. These pollywogs go on a covert mission before they can cross the equator and be shellbacks.

Foreigners are not allowed to by the subsidized fuel in Ecuador. Linus does so anyways because he reasons it is too risky not to with the prevailing winds on the nose and a tired and seasick crew hundreds of miles from the first port of entry in Ecuador. Sophie, Janna, and Linus are refreshed from the shore excursion. They also get their laundry done after enduring continuous rains for four days in the previous episode:

“Seasick Sailing Across the Pacific in a Tiny Sailboat, Panama to Ecuador S1E12” at

Linus argues that marina and “yacht club” at Casa Blanca near Sua is not a port for sailboat. He also discovers that the electronic charts by Garmin and Navionics are wildly inaccurate along the northern Ecuador coast. They round Punta Galera, Ecuador, but can they get a better wind angle?

Janna and Linus celebrate becoming Shellbacks by drinking the ink of the kracken in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, engine problems slow them down. While they are slowly tacking south they see humpback whales in front of their bow. They arrive at the Puerto Lucia Yacht Club, but in the next episode the Slow Boat gets hauled out, and LInus and Daly have are prevented from leaving Ecuador.
