Steampunk is more than just brass, watchparts, cogs and pulleys and flying machines. It’s about finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic yet punkish way. It’s about living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet expresses the future. It’s about taking our modern technological society and remaking it’s elements into useful things that are creative and inventive.
When writers like Jules Verne and Mary Shelley began dreaming up the first works of science fiction, they were wondering what might be possible based on the fantastic creations of the Victorian era. Most people today aren’t aware of what the daring inventors of old managed to accomplish, and how inspiring their contrivances were. Yet, these contraptions and ideas lead to ever greater achievements.
