A literary recommendation for the Trump age. I know 1984 and The Handmaids’s Tale are all the rage right now, but in my opinion these books miss the essence of the current political climate. They get bits and pieces right, but while Orwell’s Party and Atwood’s Republic of Gilead are super evil, they’re also super competent at what they do. Saunders’ Phil is a much more accurate model for the current regime. Also, The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil is, as the title suggests, extremely brief. With any luck, that may be true of our current situation as well.
