When you write about the past everything is a "throwback" -- that's the enchantment and pleasure of the craft. But here's a particularly weird throwback from eighteenth-century Venice: imagine a Carnival mask you keep on your face by biting down on a button sewn inside! Must have made speaking your mind rather difficult.
