Leesa is a college freshman who has just learned her new boyfriend is a volkaane — a supernatural vampire hunter. Volkaanes slay vampires with a magical inner fire, which is also deadly to humans. The selection below describes their first kiss, which has to be limited to five seconds because of his fire.

"The feeling of warmth that exploded into her as their tongues connected was beyond imagining. She felt like she was flying, like a thousand tiny mouths were kissing every inch of her body, like her skin was wrapped in the most delicious chocolate and every pore could taste it. Way, way, way too soon, the timer she'd set on her cell phone beeped, and she felt Rave's lips pulling away from hers. She was glad he had the strength to end the kiss. She knew she never could have. It just wasn't fair—that something so delicious could kill her."
