The Curse

That survival instinct, that will to live, that need to get back to life again, is more powerful than any consideration of taste, decency, politeness, manners, civility. Anything. It’s such a powerful force.

“Leona, wake up! We have to go.”
“I’m coming, Mom.” Leona rolled her eyes and the memories of the past came up. “I miss you so much,” she whispered.
Seven months had passed since she had lost her father. Her fingers slipped on her father’s photograph above her white desk, while the tears of his loss kept running down her face.
“Leona!” Her mother wanted to make sure she was ready.
“I’m coming!”
The beautiful girl swept the tears away and closed the door of the pink bedroom behind her.
“It’s your last day at school and your brother is coming tonight! Now smile for me!”
“No photographs, Mom, please…in case you forgot, I am eighteen.” Leona hated this part. She hated having her picture taken.
“But your father…” Both Leona and her mother fell silent.
The young woman walked to the door of the large kitchen and rested her sight on the lake. The view was incredible. The towering trees and the colors of the nature could steal everybody’s attention.
“When is Brad coming home?” Leona couldn’t stand the silence. She had to say something.
“I guess we’ll see him tonight.” Her mother sounded impatient.
Leona turned back and gazed at her mother. When she saw her eyes, she felt horrible. Leona realized her mother would never accept the truth.
She placed her cup of coffee on the table and sat down. She closed her eyes and wondered about destiny. “Your father will no longer be with us.” Leona could still remember her mother’s words.
Heart attack, yes, that’s what the doctors said when Leona’s mother left the school to go to the hospital. Two words, enough to kill Tracy Goodan. And that day, the charming teacher lost herself. She would never heal from that injury.
“Any plans after the school?” Leona’s mother tried to sound normal.
“There’s a party at the lake.” She tried to sound like she was looking forward to it.
Tracy brushed her daughter’s black hair away from her blue eyes and, that moment, Leona noticed the wrinkles on her mother’s face. She was taken aback. Her mother looked different--she looked old. In just a few months, Tracy’s glow was gone. The middle-aged woman had lost her beauty.
“That’s great. I will be able to keep my eye on you.” Tracy shook her head and smiled.
“We’re late, Mom…”
Leona stood anxiously in front of the white door; she couldn’t keep up living with all that pain and the silent complaints about life and destiny.
The teenage girl put her black bag on her back and waited for her mother.
“Okay, I was kidding,” Tracy said, with a little laugh…
