Theaster Gates uses discarded or found materials to make large-scale installations. He walked us through a few of them at his new solo exhibition at National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. "The Minor Arts,” the show’s title, refers to craftsmanship of manual labor -- but his work explores the ways in which that intersects with other recurring themes: spirituality, reclamation, inequality, community and the black image.' --
