My Top Ten Torch Songs (Cause A Broken Heart's Gotta Cry)

I've wonder just what a torch song really is. I read the Wikipedia definition below, and then I tried to draw up a list of my top ten torch songs.

From Wikipedia:

A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship. The term comes from the saying, "to carry a torch for someone", or to keep aflame the light of an unrequited love.

#1. "Crazy" by Patsy Cline

#2. "Since You Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson (hey, I had to include a contemporary artist)

#3. "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" by Willie Nelson

#4. "Stormy Weather" by Billie Holiday

#5. "Me and Bobby McGee" by Janis Joplin

#6. "Only the Lonely" by Roy Orbison

#7. "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by Hank Williams

#9. "If You Leave Me Now" by Chicago

#10. "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel (with Karrin Allyson a close second)

Stephen Gallup Reading this I immediately thought of a guy named Scott Kalechstein who wrote a takeoff on that Three Dog Night song "An Old Fashioned Love Song." He'd switch back & forth between an achingly heartfelt verse of another song such as "I can't liiiive, if livin' is without you. I can't give--" and then switch to singing "Just another co-dependent love song."

Michele bookloverforever agree with "stormy weather"..but prefer Lena Horne's version. Roy Orbison's "crying", "diamonds and rust" by Joan Baez. "memory" from Cats...like Judy Collins version. "You were always on my Mind" by Willie Nelson.

Joan Baez and Willie Nelson are two singers I never tire of hearing. Lena Horne was a treasure. Ditto with Roy Orbison. Thanks for the comments!

Suzy "Look Away" by Chicago is much along those lines, and is my favourite song by them. And my ultimate torch song is "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor.

Great list!

Thanks for your suggestions. Chicago is a great group. Love their brass section. I'm not as familiar with Sinead O'Connor.

Interesting list. That Fifth Dimension song is a great one. Sinatra is always a good listen. Thanks, sir.

Maggie There are so many songs but, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones is a total tear-jerker!

message 9: by Tom V (new)

Tom V @Maggie: Speaking of ole Possum, "She Thinks I Still Care." Someone said it's so sad it'll make your roof leak. That's about right.

message 10: by Ed (new)

Ed "Paying For The Days Of Wine And Roses" has lots of regretful tone to it. I like your GJ two titles.

Maggie Tom V's right, "She Thinks..." is a sad one too.
