Consistency In World-Building: Don't Mess With True Love, Sucka

I've been pondering the strong opinions folks have concerning JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and why there are such feelings of betrayal by some of its readers. When this series started out, it created some rabid, truly enamored fans (I was one of them). But over the course of time, some folks got very disgruntled (me included). Some people felt the series had jumped from romance to urban fantasy. Some folks felt the heroes were getting gypped by being paired with wishy-washy heroines. Some folks were pissed with inconsistencies with time lines and world-building details.

My introduction to paranormal romance was Christine Feehan. I read the entire Dark series in chronological order. Some readers totally dig the caveman mentality/lifemate thing, and some readers think she is way too melodramatic and over-the-top. But one thing I'll say for Christine is that she is consistent. Those damned Carpathians have one lifemate, and that's it. They don't turn gay half-way into the story. They don't have menages. They don't identify a lifemate, then walk away. From the very first book, Dark Prince, she sets up her world-building details for this race and she sticks to her guns for the whole damned series. (Which is 22 books long so far). This concept of having one lifemate, for all of eternity (they are immortal) is incredibly romantic. Which is why I suspect most of her fans love these books. It's not for the bloody vampire fights, for Christ's sake. It's because no matter what else is going on in the world, our lives, the book, we know that the male hero of her story will move heaven and earth to be with his mate, to protect her, to love her. Period.

When the Brotherhood series started, it had that same vibe about "mates"....the heroes became obsessed with their mates, released yummy smelling scents (hee hee), fed them by hand, worshipped them, etc. There are definitely more layers of complexity and gray areas in the Ward series, but the fact that a very basic world-building detail (indisputable mating of one male vampire to the heroine) has been bobbling around, is a problem. A very big problem. Because romance fans want something they can count on. Even if it's a big-ass, scarred vampire with a tortuous past loving his mate beyond anything else in this world. We can get through the torture, the pain and suffering, because we know in the end, the hero will find his salvation through love with his mate.

I don't have a problem with series growing and changing over the course of time. Some of Feehan's heroes have been beta males, some are warriors and some are not, some are brutally dominant, some are more thoughtful. But the basic premise for the Carpathian people....one lifemate, no cheating, no second chances....stays consistent throughout the series. It's the glue that holds it together, and why Feehan fans remain steadfastly loyal. If you create a paranormal series with certain world-building details, and your readers totally buy into that whole thing, then you can't start messing around with it. Cause folks will be all.....what the....????

By the way, Feehan's 22nd installment of the Dark Series, Dark Predator , is coming out Sept. 6. Zacarias' story!

Here's hoping everyone has a super-duper weekend!

Audrey Yup, definitely "What the...???" over the Tohrment developments for BDB. Still have to decide if I'll read Lover Reborn.

MelissaB Can't wait for Zacharius's story! Feehan's world building has also been consistent from the beginning while sometimes I wonder if Ward remembers the rules of her own world.

Zeek "They don't turn gay half-way into the story."

lmao!

Penny Watson Hey Audrey. I won't be reading it. I'm off the BDB bandwagon. There is only one explanation for Tohr getting a new shellan--Wellsie was not actually his true mate. That sounds sort of bullshitty to me.

Yes, wonder how she will try to rationalize that.

Penny Watson Hi Melissa! Me, too! Solange is his lifemate, I think. It will be great to see her finally get a happy ending, too.

I find it super irritating that anytime a plot problem needs to be fixed (heroine dies, etc) the Scribe Virgin shows up and brings the bitch back to life (because she's infertile) or turns her into a ghost (???) or whatever. That sure is a cheap way to fix all plot problems at the end of the story. Hmm.

Penny Watson @Zeek.....:^)

message 8: by MelissaB (new)

MelissaB I wish we knew who his lifemate was! I think Solange is a good guess.

Which makes ya wonder why the Scribe Virgin couldn't bring back Wellsie, right?

message 10: by Penny (new)

Penny Watson Ha! Yes, Audrey....maybe....the Scribe Virgin flies around the earth really fast (like Superman in the first movie) and turns back time, and then makes sure Wellsie is wearing a bullet proof vest before she gets killed! Go Scribe Virgin!

Zeek Audrey wrote: "Which makes ya wonder why the Scribe Virgin couldn't bring back Wellsie, right? "

my thoughts exactly!

@penny I agree about the convenient plot device that is the scribe version. Guess the brothas dont worry bout a a little ol thing like connecting the dots in a plot when they chat to her?

true? (;P)

Zeek like my friend's dad always said- "why bring a silly thing like logic into math equations?"

Penny Watson True Dat!

message 14: by Penny (new)

Penny Watson Oops....I was wrong. Solange was in Dark Peril. I don't know who the lifemate is for Dark Predator.

message 15: by Audrey (new)

Audrey For me, BDB jumped the shark with Phury's book, Lover Enshrined, which I loathed, but then she reeled me back in with Rehv's book, Lover Avenged, which I loved. I'm leaning towards stopping the series at this point. Lover Mine and Lover Unleashed were underwhelming, and I dislike both the transformation into urban fantasy and the "Band of Bastards" storyline that she seems to be pursuing after introducing them in the last book.

Oh yeah - dulp! I forgot.

Maybe one of the Aunts? Or someone related to Solange?

Penny Watson How about the little sister who was raped? What was her name? Maybe it's her!

MelissaB Penny wrote: "How about the little sister who was raped? What was her name? Maybe it's her!"

It might be. Plus there was the woman who was injured who got blood from him. It's a little hazy since they only come out once a year!

Penny Watson Every couple of months, I stalk I mean email Christine Feehan to ask when she is writing Skyler's story. She keeps sending me messages saying, I don't know. When the time is right I'll write her story. Hellfire!!!!!! I am so ready for Skyler's story. I want it now!

message 20: by MelissaB (new)

MelissaB I need to get back to my reread, I was up to the next one after Dark Guardian but I don't reread Dark Destiny or Dark Symphony (not to my taste)

message 21: by Penny (new)

Penny Watson I never re-read Dark Destiny, but I LOVE Dark Symphony. That is the weirdest one of the bunch....it's the only one with no vampire attacks in it. Every couple of months, I re-read the entire series! I love all of Darius' family. Those are the best.

Yep Darius and Lucian are my favs.

message 23: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda My faves are Dark Desire and Dark Curse. And I agree with you totally about BDB. I bought Lover Unleashed when it came out but still haven't got round to reading it. They've lost their appeal for me.

I haven't read Lover Unleashed yet either

message 25: by Penny (new)

Penny Watson I loved the first 4 BDB books, hated V and Phury's books, liked Rhev's story--although I thought he and Xhex had better chemistry than Xhex and JM--I hated JM and Xhex together, so I never read any more of the books. I have read reviews and can tell I would hate the last 2....I heard Xhex turned from a bad-ass into a priss, and the whole ridiculous thing between V/Butch/Jane/Marissa is the dumbest thing I ever heard. Oh well, I re-read Zsadist's book when the mood strikes!

message 26: by Zeek (last edited Aug 19, 2011 06:23PM) (new)

Zeek me too Mellyb

Penny I felt exactly the same way on the ones you mentioned too (Xhex and JM were one big yawn!)- only I liked V's book, even with the wtf thing Ward did with Jane. As far as V/Butch- altho I dont usually like m/m I almost wished she wouldnt have chickened out and wrote them together... which is what I think she did. It almost feels like she was dishonest with their chracters and wrote a lie because she was afraid of losing dollars. ::shrug:: but whatever.

message 27: by Zeek (last edited Aug 19, 2011 06:33PM) (new)

Zeek well i always coulda cared less for Butch anyway... see your point tho, he does seem too hetero. Something just feels off about it all but its true I dont think I would have been happy with a m/m either. I certainly prolly woulda skipped it- which is what I believe Ward was afraid to many of the fans would have done ...

message 28: by MelissaB (new)

MelissaB Sammy wrote: "See I never felt the whole m/m thing. I mean we know V is bi. But for me butch is straight up heterosexual male. I never felt anything but a close friendship with the two. Probably why there is suc..."

Agreed!

message 29: by Penny (new)

Penny Watson I have no problem whatsoever with gay characters. It's just that if you introduce the concept of one male-one female bonding pairs in the first book of the series, then changing it to include male/male pairs, or still pining for others after you have been mated already, sounds sort of fishy to me. But what do I know? :^)

message 30: by Zeek (last edited Aug 20, 2011 07:33AM) (new)

Zeek Gay characters are fine- I however like m/f when reading romance because I hey, I'm a f. (That isnt to say I havent enjoyed m/m stories :) i just prefer m/f in romance!) I know alot of gals have a m/m thing so no biggie!
