University of Leicester free on-line course about England in the time of Richard III
I would like to thank you all again for your expressions of sympathy for the loss of a very dear friend, Valerie LaMont. I know some of you were her Facebook friends, too; Valerie had a gift for friendship and will be greatly missed by so many of us.
I have quite a few friends and readers who live in California, so I’ve been concerned by the accounts of those dangerous storms and flooding in the past week. I hope all of you have been able to stay safe.
Since so many of you share my interest in Richard III, I wanted to pass on the news that the University of Leicester will be offering another free on-line course about Richard and his times. I very nearly ended up at Leicester, due to their excellent archaeology department. I shall definitely look into the course.
Definitely some advantages in living in the age of the Internet, Iset. Where did you decide to go instead of the U of Leicester?
University College London, Sharon. Not quite as old as Oxford and Cambridge, but just as historic in its own right - first to admit on a secular basis, first to admit women, a whole slew of pioneering alumni, most notably Gandhi. Truly world class archaeology department - and just around the corner from the British Museum too. Ah, we spent many a lecture not in a seating hall but in the Museum itself, directly handling the objects. A real history-lover's dream come true.
That does sound like paradise for any history lover, Iset. Was it difficult to choose between the University College London and the U of Leicester?
Truthfully, no. Leicester's good, and they maintain a great archaeology department, but UCL is in a different stratum. The prestige is higher, the funding is higher, the access to research equipment is higher - and at the end of it my associated degree with it is more valued, since the uni is a globally recognised name.
Sharon, thank you so much for the information on this course. I finished the first week in one sitting and can hardly wait for the next lesson.

The weather over the water sounds pretty grim. Over in England we have had lots of bad weather but nothing like yours, so yes, I hope everyone is safe and the floods soon go away.
Thank you also for the news re Richard III course. I was unwell during the first one and sadly never completed it. Fingers crossed for this one. It sounds brilliant. I get Medievalists. net and can recommend it without hesitation. Take care.
