That Colossus Outfit

So Colossus did not wear this costume for all that long (less than a year, I think), but it was a the time that I started reading the comic book in school in the ‘80s and was just coming to terms with my own sexuality and kink. That dog collar around his neck really stood out to me (Obviously, since I’m probably one of the few people who remembered it was there). It has no relationship with the rest of his costume, except his belt. And this was a good six years at least before the Rob Liefield/belts-and-pouches everywhere phase of superhero costumes.

Brian mentioned on the podcast that Chris Claremont (the X-Men’s most famous, longest-running writer) had a bit of kink/leather to his subtext. Storm going full leather punk was a good example, but there was also the absurd erotic cosplay of the Hellfire Club back then and later on the femdom undercurrents in the Inferno storyline (the subtext became actual text over in Excalibur in that storyline). Once I became more aware of the undercurrent his writing, Claremont started striking me as a femdom kind of guy. His women were always powerful and in control (a frequent story trope of his was of men trying to take control of his female characters only to have it backfire terribly against them). Colossus was big and strong but also submissive.

Other subsequent writers have tried to make Colossus a more pivotal, strong-willed character but it always seems to work out badly for Peter and he gets turned into a villain for a while. Sadly, nobody has been giving him spankings for his drifts into bad behavior.
