Jumping Genres with THE DEEP END

My upcoming book, THE DEEP END, in the new series I’m introducing (the Honey series), is thrillingly getting a lot of chitter-chatter out there. And I’m hearing from readers that my leap into this new genre is either something they can’t wait for…or something that they’re not sure they want to give a go.

And the thing with this last is, my Chicklets are so freaking awesome, they feel like they’re letting me down because they’re unsure of diving into this new genre with me.

I love this loyalty. It’s a beautiful thing. And it’s not surprising, my Rock Chicks RAWK.

But I’ve been getting so much of this I decided to throw out a blog post to share a few very important things.

The first is to explain that in this biz, you gotta go into each book understanding that even for your most loyal readers, every single word you write is not going to be something they’re head over heels over. As a writer, do you want that to happen? Abso-freaking-lutely. As a realist do you understand that just isn’t gonna happen? Yup. But in the end, as a writer, you have to write the true story in its purest form as it comes to you, do right by your inner storyteller, do justice for your characters, let it pour from the heart and soul and gut, and for those who “get it,” rejoice. For those who don’t, understand the validity of that but continue to be true to your inner storyteller and hope next time, you pull them in.

But when you jump genres, you also go into it knowing there are some who will wish to follow you wherever you want to go…but it simply isn’t for them. Just like everyone doesn’t like fantasy, some readers haven’t tried my Fantasyland series. And there are those who aren’t into paranormal, therefore some haven’t gone there with my Three series. And a journal-style, stream of consciousness book about a woman who finds out she’s a witch and is going to save the world (MATHILDA, SUPERWITCH)? Try selling that one! Or let’s talk about genies. A romance novel with a genie (my THREE WISHES)? Say what? But there it is…and I love it. But some are still at the “say what?” part of that scenario! : -) And I get it.

Indeed for me, I obviously love all this stuff. But I also understand, completely, that others don’t. Because, you see, the other side of the coin is also true. I have my Chicklets who read and adore my fantasy books, but they aren’t real hip on the Rock Chicks. And there are those who have seen me go to the edge sexually with my characters, but not topple over, they want that, so they can’t wait to get their teeth into an erotica from me. And then there are those readers who just love it all.

It is the way it is and thank God it’s that way. If we were all the same and liked all the same things, how boring would that be?

Too boring to contemplate.

So me dipping my toe in the erotica BDSM world and then going the not-oft-gone route of having a series about female Dominants and alpha-submissives is another leap that I honestly understand all my readers won’t be sure they’ll want to take. So some of them just won’t. Or they’ll try it and it won’t be for them.

It’s incredibly sweet that some are coming to me and sharing with honesty that this might not be for them. I love it that I’ve created that safety that makes my readers feel they can share that honesty in such lovely, sensitive, thoughtful ways about something so much a part of me, it helps define me – my writing. And for those who are feeling this, I’ll tell you here what I’m telling the others.

I love this book. I love this series. It was an amazing journey to take, to free my mind, to open myself up to a new genre, to be creating a whole new world. I adored this experience. And I fell head over heels in love with these characters, this bold new world. And I went into it totally knowing that I needed to hold my readers safe in my hands, safe in the story. This is a Kristen Ashley book with a Kristen Ashley alpha hero. Does it *go there*? Yes. I take chances because that’s where my characters led me and to be true to them, I followed, so I didn’t hold them back. But I did my utmost to keep you safe as I went there with my characters and I hope even if you try it and it isn’t your gig, you feel I accomplished at least that.

However, it’s more. And I’ll share with you what I shared with the bloggers who received advanced copies of THE DEEP END.

My attempting this genre has been a long time coming, starting back in 2011 when I wrote a very racy, erotic scene for my character Valentine while I was writing WILDEST DREAMS. In the end, I felt the scene was too much for my readership at the time, and sadly, I decided I needed to delete it.

But I kept going back to that scene, building on it, fiddling with the story, even so far as creating a novella I never released because, by this time, my courage to unleash this story was ebbing and flowing wildly and I just had to let it go and move on, even if I *really* did not want to.

When I finally gave myself permission to *just do it* and I started THE DEEP END, the feeling was too magnificent to describe. Love stories like THE DEEP END and the upcoming THE FARTHEST EDGE have been in me for a long time, and to finally set them free was an incredibly beautiful and liberating experience.

However, with all of this said, I will admit that the nerves are still there. I’m always nervous when I release a book, but with this one, I put myself (but more, my characters) so out there, well…we’re in the deep end.

Although the books in this series are my books in my voice with characters the likes you’ve come to expect from me living love stories of support, trust and connection, they take the steamy scale and pretty much smash it with a sledgehammer. To boil it down, if you’ve read them you’ll know that in my books sex, as it is in romantic relationships, is just one important part of how people build a variety of intimate connections. I do not shy away from it, but it is only one part of a bigger whole. In the books of the Honey series, starting with THE DEEP END, the characters discover each other (*thoroughly*) at first through exercising their sexual natures and appetites and the building of trust, support and connection derives from that.

And it’s important to note, as I mentioned above, in THE DEEP END their sexual natures are a Domme and her alpha-sub. But I will stress, although the hero in this story is a sexual submissive, he’s an *alpha*¬-submissive with the alpha part of that being simply who he is, including beyond his sexuality. He is a Kristen Ashley hero in more aspects than just the fact I wrote him. He may be dealing with conflicted thoughts in this book, but he’s the supremely protective, loyal, loving alpha, if you read my work, you’ve come to know and hopefully love.

To end, these books are *very* hot, *very* sexual, *very* sensual, *very* racy and could—to some if not forewarned appropriately, especially being a departure from what I normally do—seem shocking.

So I post this blog to prepare those who may be a little unsure about it for the world you’re about to dive into if you dive into my DEEP END. This is not a handbook for the BDSM world. THE DEEP END is a delicious, forbidden *fantasy* of sex and romance and love—but it’s important to note—it’s that *in that order*.

With all that said, if you dive into THE DEEP END, I hope I’ve made it safe for you to get lost in this warm, decadent world of sex and trust and discovery and exploration, and most of all…love.

Happy reading and rock on!

message 2: by Elisa (new)

Elisa I love everything you write so I'm sure I'll love your new series. I've read erotica and some of it is good and some is awful. I'm sure yours will be wonderful because you are a great writer. Good Luck!

message 3: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I have been the reader afraid to take on a new genre with you (Fantasyland Series) and oh how I wanted to kick my own butt for waiting for so long. I love everything you write and I am more excited about The Deep End now after reading your blog post. Whatever you write from now on I read. Lesson learned.

message 4: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Manning I have preordered too. You, as always, have my full support. You have never let me down.

message 5: by Danielle (new)

Danielle I have seen the comments some people have written about this new series... with a"How dare she" bent to them... I whole heartedly agree with your statements that everything you write is not for everyone... I am very much looking forward to this series but not a fan of the sci-fi... tried it because its you but it's not my thing... I don't understand why people always have to be so mean... be kind people... if it's not your thing, Rock On ❤

message 6: by Montserrat (new)

Montserrat Every book I have read from you I have loved and I will try this one as well. Thank you for sharing your talent. I admire you and your courage to write this beautiful stories and sharing them with all your readers. Thank you for the gift.

Judy Keating I'm sure in this politically correct environment, some people will be offended and turned off by the subject matter content with the book "The Deep End".
Growing up in the 40's, 50's and 60's this book would have been read under the covers with a flashlight. But I have broadened my literary horizons in lots of genres. Books that deal with same sex relationship stories are gaining in popularity.
My appreciation to Kristen Ashley for expanding our reading pleasure into a world many of us don't know. I love all of her series and will continue to be a fan.

message 9: by Rva (new)

Rva Booklover Girl, I can't even describe how much I am looking forward to this new journey with you and your characters. Truth - the sex scenes in your books have always struck me as different than the norm. By that I mean, starting the chapter with sex, or starting the scene in the middle or at the end of a sexual encounter. Different and unusual, attention grabbing and interesting to me as a reader. But the depth of feeling, the touch, the connection between the characters is always front and center. So, while I enjoy the BDSM/erotica genre normally, I am thinking The Deep End is going to be epically up my alley! Can't *wait*!!

Cami Thank you for this blog post, Ms. Ashley.
As always, you make strapping in for the ride worth the ride - I learned that truth with the Fantasyland series.
So thank you again for giving us a reason to appreciate your work as you grow and let us grow with you.

message 11: by Deidra (last edited Feb 20, 2017 04:45PM) (new)

Deidra Ok, I'm squealing with excitement. Gah!!!!! Not only have you helped many Rock Chicks find their inner Badass but you have helped us push ourselves to be who we want to be and more. So to expect you to be and do less than that for yourself would be asinine. We need and want Kristen Ashley to be the best she can be for her own happiness and to continue to bring excitement, sisterhood, romance, fantasy, escape, wonder, and inspiration to the sisterhood who truly loves and supports you. I am excited for you and for us. So I give you an early Congrats and huge hug for a series we will surely love and will undoubtedly mark us (in a really good way) as most of your stories and characters do. As always, you Rock and we love you.

message 12: by Bunny (new)

Bunny I can't wait for this new adventure! You are always so good to us so I'm not worried.

message 13: by Etrichmond (new)

Etrichmond I had not heard of this genre before, but I reas an interview where you talked about Joey Hill, so while I was waiting for your book I read several of her's and loved them! As one of my favorite characters is Deacon I absolutely can't wait for this series! I will follow you anywhere!

message 14: by Emily (new)

Emily Fantis I pre ordered today!! I can't wait and have a firm belief that I will be safe in your story!!! So happy that you were able to put it out there!! Congrats!! Rock on KA

Cyndi Preble Because I love you so much I have ordered this and will give it a try. I am one of the 'not sures' but you haven't disappointed yet. Hoping for the best, promise to have an open mind.

message 18: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Hull I hope readers take a chance and follow you into the deep end with Olivier and Amelie. It's different, it's very brave, it's SERIOUSLY HOT... and it still makes me blush just thinking about it!

message 19: by Desiree (new)

Desiree Cant wait!

message 20: by Kythahra (new)

Kythahra I have to admit it - I'm one of "them". Not the "them" who are complaining, but the "them" who have serious reservations. It's nobody's fault - I'm a total sucker for male-dom stuff, and fem-dom just squicks me out.

That said, having been a fan since you were just Kristen Ashley (not... THE Kristen Ashley, all mainstream published and audio-booked), I'm really pleased for you that you've been able to create something that means so much to you.

So, y'know what? If you can put yourself out there enough to write it, I can bloody well put myself out there enough to read it,

Count me in!

message 21: by Jennifer (last edited Feb 20, 2017 09:21PM) (new)

Jennifer Ever since Deacon (Unfinished Hero) I was like "OMG! Is she gonna go there one day?" I can't wait to read this new series!

message 22: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Kocerginsky Honestly I love all your books! Already read them at least twice. I can't wait for the new series and the continuation of the others.

message 23: by Cécile (new)

Cécile Smits Every now and then, everyone feels like they need to do something different. Because they feel they need it. And not everyone feels that need in the same way that you do,but that's ok. Because, like you said,we're not all the same. As long as you feel good about what you do,you should do it,period. I,for one, like everything you've done so far and i know i'll like what's coming.

message 24: by Nadine (new)

Nadine Deacon Kristen Ashley I don't think you could ever let me down as awriter no matter what you write. Your characters are always beautiful no matter what, even when I don't like them I love them. You have the gift of always pulling me into your books until I become part of them. Thank you Kristen and always go with your heart and listen to the stories that need to come out, you will never go wrong.

message 25: by Davina (new)

Davina Phillips I was lucky enough to get an advance copy! It was all that you would expect from Kristen Ashley and more. Just on a book level if you are into reading about bdsm and following the lifestyle. She does go into the detail about the "honey club" and how a Domme would expect her sub to behave. While in vivid details getting to see how that would feel when you have a man right where you would want him.( Bring on the hot flashes! ) Then you make him do every fantasy on his and your list...Then daytime comes and they have jobs and friends and personal problems just like the rest of us. Bigger than that? They realize that maybe you want your night time enjoyment to join your days! Bottom line is Kristen Ashley never disappoints! Don't get me wrong the book is white hot! The sex is detailed. So you won't have to use as much of your imagination! Lol..The deep end gives readers the best of both worlds. The chance to fall in love and a club to live out your fantasies! One last note! Those of you that don't want to back ka I get your not into the book. That's ok. Don't read it. Trust me it's so your lose. As long as your not the ones questioning why she would do it! I love all she does but normal live does not contain bullets, kidnapping, being buried alive, rape, handcuffed, etc everyday. Might I add all of the above is available at a bdsm club..while being buried alive might have to be simulated! So don't be too Quick to judge! Rock on Ollie and Leigh-Leigh

This was the first book I've ever read where the sub was male. THE FIRST! It was a lot to wrap my head around, especially when I know what I've come to expect of KA's alpha males. It's hard to juxtapose the two in my mind. But I liked it. It's different... I didn't like it for all the same reasons I love Ty, Joker, Lee, Tate, Hawk, Tack, I had to let all that go and accept that this book would be different. I just loved it for what it was. I hope you enjoy it.

message 27: by Hira (new)

Hira Mehtab MG, I think I my heart just swelled

message 28: by I (new)

I C I'm so happy that you gave yourself "permission" to go there. You have a GREAT talent and you should never hold any of your stories in. Share them sister! New genre = more fans. I think what makes you successful is the genuineness of your writing. So if you're feeling something just let it out and share it. As you know, you can't please everyone all of the time.

I, for one, love this genre and cannot wait to read it.

message 29: by Kristy (new)

Kristy Johnston Thanks for your comments and feelings about writing a book from a different genre than your readers are used to seeing from you. I find all of our different opinions and reasons for reading what we do fascinating. I'm excited to read your new book the Deep End. I have not read all of your books yet, just simply because I'm a recent fan but I'll give most things a chance. I've been reading the BDSM genre for a while and I think that's probably why your 'alpha' heroes appeal to me. I had purchased a book last summer where the hero was a submissive and I wasn't sure if I would like it since I like 'alpha' males so it sat on my kindle for months and months and I just never felt in the mood to read it until the holidays. I ended up regretting that I had waited so long to try it because I ended up loving the 'alpha' hero who was a sexual submissive. So I feel like I am now in the perfect state of mind to read your new book as soon as my pre-order downloads!

message 30: by Marvy (new)

Marvy McNeese I have experienced all of your genres and have NEVER, not once, been disappointed.
Admittedly I'm not a fantasyland or genie-genre girl, but LOVED your Fantasyland series and Three Wishes!! I loved The Three series!!!
I simply cannot WAIT to dip into some HONEY!!!

message 31: by Kirha (new)

Kirha Umm did you say VALENTINE!!! Please publish that!

I am seriously excited for this book and can read any genre. jump around to whatever you want. If you decide to write dino porn...yes apparently this does exist..then I will follow. Your audible books always kick ass and I'm so glad I found you so rock on!

message 32: by Kathy (new)

Kathy As a writer, you should be able to write whatever you want without having to explain yourself - if people don't like the sound of the book they need not read it. I have pre ordered the book and look forward to reading it.

message 33: by JudyCa (new)

JudyCa I pre-ordered months ago because I love your books and regardless of the genre, I'm going to read it! I wouldn't be able to call myself a fan of yours if I didn't at least give the new series a chance.

message 34: by Cala (new)

Cala Hey Chickie, gotta say I almost didn't read Golden Dynasty just because of the wife hunt. But, you proved me wrong and pulled me into your world! Then I read Knight and thought maybe this series isn't for me and now I have re-read it like 5 times. So, I guess I'm saying, I quit doubting whatever you want to write, I will readily follow!! Thank you for being the awesomeness that you are!!!!

message 35: by dgowdy (new)

dgowdy After reading your post I've pre ordered The Deep End.

message 36: by Shannon (new)

Shannon I adore everything you write! I read a wide range of everything, including BDSM, but have never been fond of Domme/Male sub situations. Can't wait for you to change my mind!

message 37: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin I was on the fence about a pre-order, but after reading the first two chapters as well as the excerpts that have been released, I have a feeling I'm going to love this just as much as all of your other stuff! Am really intrigued by the idea of an alpha sub and what that means/looks like.

message 38: by Maya (new)

Maya SQEEEEE!!!

Can't.

Wait.

message 39: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I appreciate your note to your readers. Just another awesome aspect we've come to know and love about our fave Rock Chick

I will definitely be reading this series and hope to love it as much as I have your other books.
:)

message 40: by Rishika (new)

Rishika I love your writing and characters, and I've read the Unfinished Hero series and there is some steamy stuff in there. But I'm quite excited to find out how well you do with this. Is is going to be great or awesome? It can never be bad :)

message 41: by Annie (new)

Annie I have faith. I'm not a huge fan of MC books, but I love your Chaos series. If there were someone who could get me to like a BDSM book, it would be you.

message 42: by Melou53 (new)

Melou53 Pre ordered kindle and audio book. I've read all your genre and love it. I can't wait for your take on the BDSM stuff. Whoopee!!! I also love the way you took time out to put your readers at ease. Thanks for being a great writer and sharing with us and just putting it out there. Rock On!

message 43: by Rae (new)

Rae I just purchased this book (ebook and audio) and can't wait to delve into it. Thank you for expanding horizons.

message 44: by Celeste (new)

Celeste If you re-wrote the dictionary, I'd probably even read that. I've never turned down a book written by you and it isn't starting anytime soon ;) Especially with that description! I'm so grateful for your writing soul!

message 45: by Jo (new)

Jo Ortiz I'm into 70% of the book and after numerous starts and stops, I admit that this is not for me. I skipped the sex scenes and focused on the story instead. Apparently, I'm not ready for BDSM. I'm keeping an open mind and I think once I finish the book, a reread should be done immediately. I hope that after the reread, I can truly appreciate the storyline.
