What do Survivors do?

One of my sons views the future with dread, imagines the worst, and believes we might all soon be dead. It's a sad point of view, but I recognize it from my own youth, when I was always sure one of the "big three" (Russia, America or China) would foolishly "push the button" and condemn us all to die. Eventually movie-makers filmed their tales - Australians patiently awaiting the end; triumphant American pioneers rebuilding it all, or downtrodden English survivors slaving on. Meanwhile I grew...

Jean I see the Union of Atomic Scientists has re-set the doomsday clock closer to midnight than they have since the end of the Cold War. it surely doesn't help that we have a madman in the White House, and even some Republicans are calling the administration dysfunctional. Hopefully this will lead to a short-lived trump administration and not to another war or nuclear catastrophe.

But your experience of being a gloom-and-doom young person should show your son that worrying about the future is not worthwhile. I wish him happiness, and may it last a long, long time

Thank you Jean. I'm not sure asking him to carry yet more furniture in our basement will grant him happiness, but at least it will give him something else (an aching back perhaps) to think about.
