Peter Martin | Public Service Same Size As 20 Years Ago

It is a lot easier for politicians to talk about slashing the budget than actually finding where to make savings and what to cut. The public service is a favourite victim of the ever present political drive to improve efficiency and reduce spending. A recent article in The Canberra Times, which picks up on CPD's study The State of the Public Service: An Alternative Report, discusses the difficulty the Coalition may have in finding it's proposed $70 billion in cuts:


"The Coalition may find it harder than it imagines to slash $70 billion from government spending."


The quality of our public service (which is the same size as 20 years ago despite a 3 million increase in population) is perhaps in danger.
