6) JOHN QUINCY ADAMS

President from 1825-29

The son of President John Adams

First US minister to Russia

He became a lawyer without attending law school

He was the brains behind James Monroe's eponymous Doctrine

Spent much of his presidency at war with his VP, John C. Calhoun, who undermined him  at every opportunity

He argued in the Supreme Court for the slaves who seized the ship, The Amistad, overthrew the crew and tried to sail back to Africa. The court ruled in their favor.
