Beta-Reading and Not Being a Nice Person: A Primer
The biggest and best lesson I ever took away from the writer’s group I attended years ago was this: Don’t be the nice guy.
This would seem counter intuitive, I guess. People usually attend a writer’s group to find a welcome space for a creative endeavor, a place where they can “be” writers–whatever the fuck that means–and to seek encouragement.
The writer’s group I attended between 2006 and 2010 did not subscribe to that theory. Thank god.

My first paid writing assignment was as columnist for THE CLARION CALL, Clarion University's student newspaper (I was officially the "Circulation Manager", but the job was so mind-numbingly simple it took five minutes and the outgoing Editorial Board, upon giving me the job, pointed out that they just wanted to give me something that would put me in the bullpen). Since then, I've dabbled with the idea of nonfiction writing again--scratch a writer, get someone who can't shut their goddamned mouth--but I'm a lazy researcher and while I was an okay journalist, I enjoyed just riffing on things.
