Progress Report August 2011

Hi all. Here's a long overdue progress report.

Shadowfell:

It looks as if the first novel in this new YA series will be called simply 'Shadowfell', and the others will have different titles followed by 'A Shadowfell book.' I've just finished a round of revisions based on the combined report from my Australian and US editors, and the manuscript has gone back to them. If they're happy with the revisions, we'll move on to copy edit stage (where the ms gets checked for errors of logic, spelling and punctuation etc.) Basically, this means the hardest work (for me, at least) is done on this book. I love it and I hope readers will too. Although Shadowfell is shorter than my adult novels I think it's a satisfying read for adults. The editors commented on what a wonderful protagonist fifteen-year-old Neryn was. And guess what? They let me keep the Scots dialect.

We discovered the name Shadowfell had been used recently in Dungeons and Dragons, but decided to keep it.

Return to Sevenwaters:

Please note, this is not necessarily the final title for this new Sevenwaters book - I just needed something to call it while I was working on it. I've written around 109,000 words out of an estimated 150,000. Because the deadlines for this book and Shadowfell 2 are very close to each other, I am going to be extremely busy until around April 2012. The trip overseas plus the need to put this project down to do the Shadowfell edits meant I fell a bit behind my schedule. I've also got some other activities coming up (see below) that will gobble up some time. So I am likely to be very slow to reply to emails and letters from readers, and not very active on the online forums. The place you're most likely to see me is on the Facebook Fan Page (link in left column.)

I am pleased with Return to Sevenwaters so far. Maeve is an interesting narrator. Her character has been shaped by the traumatic accident in her childhood and her resulting injury, and also by the fact that she has spent ten years living at Harrowfield as a foster daughter of Bran and Liadan before returning home at the age of 20. Young Finbar, aged 7, also has a major part to play in the story.

Other writing-related activities:

I am a guest at the Big Sky Readers and Writers Festival in Geraldton, Sept 9-11. Program details should be available from the Geraldton Public Library. My sessions below:

Friday Sept 9 (9.30-10.30): Creating Your Own Legends (for young adult writers)

Saturday Sept 10 (2.00-3.30) Finding Your Writers Voice (for adult writers)

Sunday Sept 11 : Panel discussion with Lara Morgan  'Out of this World'

I'm presenting a three hour writing workshop on November 19, in Rockingham, as part of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, for those who haven't encountered this phenomenon.) More details available later.

I have third 'extra' job between now and the end of the year, which I can't make public at this stage. To put it simply, my workload is ridiculous. Must learn to write faster ...

Sorry, no news yet. I have four other books to write before I can even think about it!

Thank you, Lauren, this was exactly what I needed to hear at this time of ridiculously heavy workload. :)

Thank you, Spinnerette! I judge books by whether they make me cry - if they do they get extra points.

message 12: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Hooray! I'm so glad there's more that will be out relatively soon. I read the Sevenwaters books for the first time this winter, and I just devoured them. I'm so excited!!

message 13: by Jane (new)

Jane Hinrichs Can't wait. Juliet, your writing is incredible. What about a sequel to Heart's Blood? I absolutely loved that book. The characters were so good. The only thing I don't like about your books is that they end! Thank you for sharing your talent with the world!

And one day, please come to South Dakota!

Amy Can't wait for the new Sevenwaters novel!!

Sorry, no news as yet. I don't think there will be any developments on Wildwood until the Shadowfell series is up and running, so you will have to wait a couple of years at least. I simply wouldn't have time to write it before then, and it also depends on whether the publisher changes her mind about wanting another Wildwood book.

Thank you Jane. Sequel to Heart's Blood - possible as the next adult book I write (after I have written boks 2 and 3 of the Shadowfell series) but I have other possibilities in mind too. I won't decide which project to do until the Shadowfell books are finished.

Juliet Kerry wrote: "Aww I was hoping to hear an update on Wildwood, but very happy for the new books as well :)"

See my answer to Shannon concerning Wildwood - not much of an update really, just an indication that a decision may be a couple of years off, sorry!

Juliet Amy wrote: "Can't wait for the new Sevenwaters novel!!"

:) Now I'd better get back to writing it!

message 20: by Kate (new)

Kate I'm absolutely in love with the Sevenwaters series!!! I think they are the only books that I want to read back to back but don't, just so I can savor them :) I'm on Child of the Prophecy right now and I absolutely love it so far! I can't wait to read Heir to Sevenwaters and to buy more of your books!

message 21: by Kate (new)

Kate Also, I'm kind of quirky when it comes to books... I only own the first three books of the Sevenwaters series because I can't seem to find the rest to match them. They are the large paperback books. If anyone knows where I can find/order the rest of the series to match those that I already have, I would very much appreciate the help. If I have to cave and buy books that don't match so I can read them, I totally will, but I love these books so much that I want them to all look the same and I'd like to stay true to my quirk. Thanks!

Trina Like many of your fans before me, I fell in love with Sevenwaters. So glad more are on the way. Congratulations on your busy schedule! I'm sure it is a balance of bitter & sweet, however, creativity shouldn't be rushed for fear of a forced outcome. We have faith in you and know you will both finish and finish well.

I am absolutely on the same page as Spinnerette! Your sevenwaters books make me cry every time I read them, and were the first to do so! When I start reading them I get into a phase where once I finish one, I have to begin the next, and tend to reread all of them... at least I could when I only knew the sevenwaters series! Now I have too many books to reread because they are all so wonderful! Thank you so much for making me enjoy romance novels by bringing them into the wonderful world you did! Loved it from the very first sentence I read =) <3
