This is a fixed point in time. Choose wisely.

I am so disgusted by my government, and the cowards in Congress who refuse to stand up to the popular vote losing madman who currently sits in the White House, so profoundly out of his depth, he can be controlled by a neonazi and sent off to watch a children’s movie while thousands upon thousands of my fellow Americans take to the streets to challenge and resist his deplorable, unconstitutional, Fascist actions.

Yet I am also proud, inspired, and comforted by the millions of people not just in America, but around the world, who are standing up and declaring that we will fight this despicable scourge, this illegitimate, incompetent, corrupt, hateful, bigoted, petty tyrant, and everything he stands for. We will fight him until he is defeated, and we will never forget the appeasers and cowards who did nothing to stop him. Those who stand by silently, or offer empty words are no better than the evil men and women who enable this would-be dictator.

This is a binary moment in history, and all of us must make a choice that we will live with for the rest of our lives: you may choose to stand with Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, Richard Spencer, and the racist white nationalists who support them, or you may choose to stand on the side of justice, equality, and the rule of law.

Choose wisely.

John Grimes We also have to take responsibility as well for putting the craven cowards in office who aren't standing up to the madman as well. It is our votes (or lack thereof) that enable scenarios such as our current one to exist. It is truly OUR government. If neglected? We see the effects, first hand.

Allie West At this point, it feels so hopeless...

Joseluis It's a Seldon crisis.

Jon Thank you for speaking your mind, Wesley. Our country is on a dark path, and I truly am afraid we will not be able to stop this march into madness and corruption.

Kelly Also, let's not forget the corporate "Democrats" that helped Trump get elected. Corporate sellout Obama--for pushing the terribleness of Hillary Clinton down our throats. Corporate sellout Debbie Wasserman-Schultz for cheating on Bernie like the lowlife puke she is. Corporate sellout Hillary Clinton, the worst candidate of all time--who adored the Electoral College system--like the establishment, money and power hungry slime that she is. And, let's not forget, the scumbag DNC/POS. All of those corporate pigs have got to go--right now! Choose wisely, indeed!

Jon I am furious with all of our so-called 'journalists' and media - from the NYTimes to every major mainstream news/reporting organization that chose to go for ratings vs reality and actual journalistic integrity. They helped to create the circus show and divert attention from this man's real lack of suitability for any kind of public office - ever.

So now we have in the White House: a man with the attention-span of a 6-year old, and the vocabulary of a 5-year old (who may be working directly with Russia for monetary gain, and thereby guilty of TREASON); a white supremacist puppet-master (who is on record many times over stating his views - Bannon); and an upcoming Cabinet filled with Republican Corporatists who work for their own interests (the 1% wealthiest), and various other power-hungry sycophants (I include all Trump children and spouses in this category).

And - yes - our mainstream Democrats are also corrupt and money-hungry sellouts. Both parties - this entire system - seems to be nearing its end. I really do not have high hopes that the United States will still exist as a 'free' republic in 30 more years.

Lisa Macklem I have already been attacked on Twitter and Facebook for taking a stand and being "Canadian" which apparently means I have no right to have an opinion. It's long been said that when the US sneezes, Canada catches a cold, but we've been doing better lately in standing up to the bully to the south - I take heart in our Prime Minister taking Fox to task for their reporting of alternative facts in the Quebec tragedy for instance. I have already participated in my local Women's March on January 21 - it's the first time I've ever attended a protest. Today I will go in to my law school and help the JD students (I'm a PhD student) look for cases and other legal support as every law school across the country spends 4-12 hours researching to support a legal challenge to the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States. After that, I hope to join our local rally for the #NoMuslimBan rally. So all this has gotten me off my complacent ass. The only other thing that this whole mess has done that might be positive is that it has dragged out into the light, the evil that has been hiding under rocks. A lot easier to find and identify the bad apples now...

Tina Haigler Well said! I stand with you and for everything that is decent in this world. I'm embarrassed and saddened to say I'm American but at the same time I am proud of my fellow Americans for rising up and saying no to this tyrant.

message 9: by Philip (new)

Philip Paxton Please tell me what Trump has done that is fascist that Obama did not do before? I hear and read many say that Trump is a fascist but if he is then every president since at least FDR was. Lincoln was considered to be a Tyrant by many in his own time and not just by those southerners in rebellion at the time.
Those that oppose Trump are certainly entitled to do so as long as they remain peaceful.

To say he is out of his depth is another argument that I find lacking. You don't get elected without being somewhat competent on the way politics work. And he is choosing many who are universally respected to advise him like General Mattis. Is he a polished politician? By no means is he. Does that mean he is incapable of doing the job? I don't think so.

Now having said all this there are things i find troubling about Trump. His insecurity for one, but then again maybe that is simply because he's out of his comfort zone. Policy wise he's been a little too Big Brother for my tastes. But I don't think he's been worse than any of the last 13 or 14 Presidents.
He's not my first choice for being leader of this country as that was Rand Paul or Austin Stevens. But he is not the demon that the majority of the press and those on the left make him out to be.

Now I'm always willing to reassess based on new evidence but the executive order temporarily halting immigration from 7 countries for 90 days and pausing refugees from 1 Country from 120 days is not something that I find fascistic or even a bad idea. Especially considering Congress has delegated such authority to the president and that many Presidents have exercised said authority in similar ways.

But let's stop the "everyone I disagree with is Hitler" rhetoric.

carol. Philip, who obviously joined GR just to comment on this thread--no person said the "everyone I disagree with is Hitler," except you. But way to make a classic pro-right move by discounting and ignoring Will's points under a blanket false equation.

Way to join a reading community just to spread your own kind of rhetoric.

message 11: by Jon (new)

Jon Thank you, Carol -- I had exactly the same thought about this so-called "Phillip"...who is probably working out of the Kremlin's very own little spammer-commenter-fake-news-generator group! I mean really -- someone with obviously no interest in our community SOMEHOW reads our comments and joins in order to comment?!

Well, the absurd no longer surprises me. And if "Phillip"-Nachnaya-Maiikov" is really an American and believes the garbage he spouted...we are in for some dark times indeed.
