Did John kill Mary? (Yes. Yes, he probably did.)

I think it’s now a widely enough accepted theory by now that what makes TST weird is that the story is being told us by Sherlock, who is altering the facts to give John an alibi, because he’s the one who killed Mary.

A few meta (these are just some) point that theory out, and here I gather a few facts that support this theory.

It became longer than I thought, so click on read more!

Thanks for piecing this together with all the screen caps and everything. I’m onboard with the John killed Mary theory and this lays it out very neatly.

I have a question about alibi theory (sorry for dumping it here but otherwise about no one will see it):

I find this theory really dark. Yes, they’ve hammered it home time and time again that this series would be dark. But why do we just accept that John would kill Mary and frame someone else for it? I can see John killing Mary in an act of self-defence, but premeditated murder (at least that’s the vibe I’m getting from the theory right now)? That’s hard to swallow. What’s the motive, what happened so it came to this?

No, I don’t think it’s predmeditated murder. John is too moral for that. I think the alibi came about AFTER Mary was shot, as a way to get John out of trouble, similar to the way the Jefferson Hope killing happened in S1.E1 ASiP.

So I would speculate some sort of scenario where:

* Sherlock and John were trying to figure Mary out and keep an eye on her.

* Ajay shows up and threatens her. Mary goes after Ajay and kills him in Morrocco. (they need to justify her as truly nasty before killing her, unlike the sanitized Mary we saw in T6T)

* Sherlock meets Mary at the aquarium, offering to help her “disappear” for good (leaving John and Rosie alone). OR, it is arranged to try to arrest her. Somehow, she gets the upper hand on Sherlock and goes to shoot him and John has no choice but to shoot her in self-defense.

* The alibi is then dreamed up to try to “avoid a court case”. This is the story we’re seeing.

Obviously, I don’t know the real details, but I would imagine if John killed her, he did it in defense of himself, Sherlock, or some innocent bystander.

It’s just a theory, but there’s some great subtext support for it. We’ll see.

ETA : As for framing someone else for it, I saw another meta go by that Norbury would be ‘disappeared’ by Mycroft and nicely compensated. That’s all total  speculation though.
