No Shopping for a Year? What was I thinking?
On Thursday it will officially be 2 months since my last good shop. I went with my sister to Tiffany and bought two really lovely pairs of earrings. One pair for my sister, one for me. It was a beautiful spring day, the glass cases in Tiffany were sparkling, not a fingerprint in sight. The lights were soft and set just right on the jewels all around. My favorite salesperson emerged from behind a counter. "How did those things work for those people?" She wanted to know of the last visit, not quite remembering the things or the people they were for. I didn't know this visit would be the last for a year. Hadn't planned on it, but I can't imagine having enjoyed the trip more.
So what I'm planning on for June 20, 2012 is a nice visit to Tiffany. Looks kind of silly to see it written, especially considering the overwhelming and building evidence of a broken world.
I picked up a book at the library called Not Buying It. Way too political for my liking (I read to escape for crying out loud!) but there were some interesting parts. It chronicles the author's year of only buying essential items. This means, ahem, she did not buy q tips for a year, didn't go to a movie for a year (not even documentaries!), no books.
Interesting concept.
I might be making a baby step in that direction by cutting out any new clothes or accessories. I've certainly lived more purposefully. I had two pairs of shoes repaired over the weekend instead of going in search of new replacements, which also makes me feel pretty good.
Who knows, maybe by the time June 20 rolls around I won't want to go to Tiffany. Maybe I'll want to clean out my closet again and simplify my life even more. But I'm pretty sure no matter what, I'll be buying q-tips all year long!
