Nathan Parker's comments in Scotty's post below on John Flavel led me to track down this quote, from the end of a sermon by Flavel on John 3:18–

How groundless and irrational is the mirth and jollity of all carnal and unregenerate men? They feast in their prison, and dance in their fetters. O the madness that is in the hearts of men!
