Subscription Marketing: Holiday Edition

Subscription Marketing Email Update

December 15, 2006

Greetings!

In planning for 2017, I want to ask you: What do you want to see in these emails? More about marketing? More crazy subscription services?

Reply to this email and let me know how to tailor the content to your needs.

This issue of the Subscription Marketing update has a little bit of everything: subscription economy stats, subscription services, and gift ideas for marketers.

How big is the subscription economy?

This whole subscription economy thing is bigger than you may think. Zuora has published a Subscription Economy Index that puts some hard numbers around it.

Among the highlights:

Subscription-based business sales are growing nine times faster than sales in the S&P 500 sales.
2015-2016 is characterized by both by net account growth and increasing average revenue per account (ARPA)

Gift ideas for marketers

For the marketers on your list, check out Content Marketing Institute’s yearly list of Most Significant Content Marketing Books Published in 2016. Author Roger C. Parker includes wonderful mini-reviews of each book on the list. My personal reading list grew longer after reading this post.

(I posted my own list of recommended books for writers here.)

How about subscriptions to books?

Cognitive scientists say that we get more joy from experiences (good ones) than stuff. Giving a subscription is kind of like giving experience. So, here are a few bookish ideas on subscriptions.

Audible: Audible offers subscribers one audiobook per month, plus the ability to purchase additional audiobooks at a discount. (My own books are on Audible.) You can give someone a 3, 6, or 12-month membership.

Scribd: Scribd gives subscribers access to ebooks, articles, and audiobooks – perfect for the book geek that reads and listens prolifically. (I fall into this category.) And as with Audible, you can give subscriptions as gifts.

Physical Books: With the growing subscription box trend, gift-givers have many more options than the venerable Book Of the Month club. Check out this list of 16 subscriptions from Bustle.

And, happy holidays!

My wish for you: a simplified, joyful, healthy holiday leading to a productive new year.
