Two By Two by Nicholas Sparks
Two By Two - Realistic family fiction.
Two By Two is the latest family drama by popular author, Nicholas Sparks. This story is told from the perspective of the male lead character, Russ, a hard-working family man with a wife, Vivian, and a young daughter, London. From the outside Russ's life seems idyllic--he's a successful advertising executive with a beautiful wife and daughter. However, his life slowly begins to unravel; first, with the loss of his job, and then, with the demise of his marriage. When Russ decides to start his own advertising company, Vivian chooses to go back to work after years of being a stay-at-home mom. The changes in the family dynamic wreak havoc on their marriage, and Russ essentially becomes a single dad. This was a very long book, and the majority of the story was depressing. There were a few redeeming aspects, such as, Russ becoming closer to his daughter, Russ's loving relationship with his sister, and when he reunites with an old flame. That said, I didn't particularly like or relate to the main characters. Russ was often depicted as a spineless pushover, and Vivian, was portrayed as a selfish witch (with a "b"). It was difficult to feel sorry for them at times, and it wasn't until the end, when something unthinkable happens, that I actually started to like Russ. This review was very difficult for me to write, because I am a Nicholas Sparks fan, however, this is not one of his best books. Of his more recent novels, I am much more fond of The Longest Ride. Still, for those of you who are die-hard fans, you may like Two By Two.
