Devastation

The symptoms were alarming
but there was cause for hope.
Things had looked frightening before
but, at the end, your health returned.

The verdict, this time, is heartbreaking,
and I know I can not survive without you.
I stand here, happy memories
shattered to shards inside my mind.

All the fights we fought together,
all the sacrifices we made,
all the promises we pledged
for a heroic bright future
aren’t going to rescue you,
not this time.
...........
What do you do
when your beloved country
is diagnosed
with a deadly disease?

…………….

This poem is dedicated to all the sane and decent Americans
who must be heartbroken at this moment, with the recent tragedy
throwing their beloved country onto a path, back to the middle ages.
