Also sitting in box 140 today was a comic I’ve been dreading - PROPHET EARTH WAR issue 6. My inclination has been to whine that Earth War has been too rushed but I’ll be the first to admit that this opinion is purely a selfish one because I don’t want Prophet to end. I enjoy the mix of SciFi and SciWeird that this run has embodied. If you are looking for an explanation of the Brandon Graham/Simon Roy helmed run of Prophet - some sort of insightful “meaning of the universe” post that opens your eyes to some obvious thread you missed, well you’re looking in the wrong place. Reading Prophet has been akin to heading to the corner store in an unfamiliar city and taking a wrong turn, finding yourself lost in some dusty ancient bazaar in a forgotten quarter and coming back with a neck tattoo and an alien strain of gonorrhea and explaining to your wife why you don’t have the tampons and Doritos that you left 2,000 years ago to pick up. Was I lost at times? Yes. But I was always entertained. Fuck it Jake, it’s Chinatown - or in this case the discarded skin of a warp-void dwelling Crystal vampire that accidentally took root on an asteroid when it sat too long on the john (not the John Prophet) with the runs. If you’re prone to SciFi fever dreams you’ll feel at home in these books.
They were kind to my breaking heart - leaving loose ends that promised the story hasn’t finished but will simply remain untold. There was, however, a small bit of heartbreak on the back cover, those awful words…
The End
