Afterthoughts published!

Here's an email I just sent out to blog subscribers and other good friends. I'll post it here because I really want to get the word out to you all ASAP:

Hi—

Is it okay to email you directly? I have an announcement I don’t want you to miss. My new eBook, Afterthoughts, has just come out from Open Road, and I want to do everything I can to get it off to a good start.

If that’s all you need to know, you can cut to the chase and snap it up for Kindle for 99¢: http://tinyurl.com/3wgyhez

There you go! Now let me tell you what you just bought…

Afterthoughts is the book friends have been urging me to write for years. And now, in the course of preparing new afterwords for my 40+ Open Road eBooks, I’ve almost inadvertently produced a piecemeal tell-all memoir of my life as a writer over the past 55 years.

All my early crime novels are here, from Grifter’s Game and The Girl With the Long Green Heart all the way to Random Walk. Then there are the dozens of early books I wrote under pen names. For years I wanted to disown them, but time has brought acceptance, and in Afterthoughts you’ll find essays and reminiscences of the days I spent as Lesley Evans and Anne Campbell Clarke, as Sheldon Lord and Andrew Shaw, as Chip Harrison and Paul Kavanagh and Lee Duncan. (And let’s not forget Jill Emerson, whose brand-new book Getting Off is due in September from Hard Case Crime; all seven of Jill’s early novels receive their due here.)

This may be the best news of all: The price of Afterthoughts is only 99¢.

Why so low? Well, I really want people to read Afterthoughts. It’s far more open and candid than I ever thought I’d be, and if I’m gonna go public, I’d like to reach as much of the public as I can. Besides that, it’s my guess that you’ll be sufficiently intrigued to sample some of the books you’ll read about.

But first things first. August 2 is the on-sale date for Afterthoughts, and by then it’ll be available on all major eBook platforms—Nook, Kobo, Apple, Sony Reader, etc. But you don’t have to wait to pre-order it for Kindle; one click of your mouse and you’ll guarantee you receive it first thing on Tuesday.

May I encourage you to order the book right now? Nothing launches a book as effectively as early orders, and I hope you’ll want to be at the head of the line.

And while I’m being pushy, let me ask you a favor. Could you forward this email to any friends who might be interested? They may thank you for it, and I know for sure that I will! In fact I’ll just conclude by saying…

…thanks in advance!

LB

PS—There’s more on Afterthoughts, including several sample chapters, on my blog http://lawrenceblock.wordpress.com/lb.... You can go there first to help you decide, or stop by after you’ve ordered the book to whet your appetite for more. Goodreads members will find a sample chapter (Campus Tramp) just posted on my Goodreads blog.

PPS—At least for now, Afterthoughts is only available as an eBook. If enough readers let me know they want a printed book, Open Road can produce a Print-on-Demand paperback. (But it’ll be priced a whole lot higher than 99¢!)

Raquel Furtado Hi Mr Block, I am a big fan of yours and I'd like to ask you: PLEASE provide this book printed! I'm old style and I like to look at my living room and see all my books together (yours occupy an entire shelf), not once at a time. Best regards from a brazilian fan (oh, just for the records, we do have kinddles here, besides criminals evaded from US, it's just a matter of preference, really). ;)

Lawrence Block Hi Raquel. I have been talking to my publishers at Open Road about this very thing, and I hope to have some good news before long. A lot of people have made the same request. As soon as we reach a decision, I'll let you all know. Para agora, obrigado, e continue a ler!

Raquel Furtado Hi Mr Block, thanks for the answer, these are really good news. As you seem familiar with the portuguese, maybe you'd like to watch a nice and funny video, presenting all the advantages of the printed book and share it with the publishers at Open Road. It's in Espanish and there are subtitles in Portuguese.

Lawrence Block Ah, Raquel, I must admit that my Portuguese is limited to what I can pick up from BabelFish. I am a little better with Spanish, but my eyes and tongue are faster than my ears; I can't understand it when it's spoken. Even so, between the Spanish speech and the Portuguese titles, I was able to understand and enjoy the video, so I thank you for sharing it.

Pamela I'm old school too. I need to hold the book in my hand. But I am SO interested I am considering buying your ebook first. I do not have any type of a reader--can it be read on my computer? And if so, will the link be in an email I can open and download onto my home computer? (I'm at work- break time, but still at work) - LOVE your books! Respectfully, Pamela K.

Lawrence Block Pamela, it's pretty simple. Go to the page http://tinyurl.com/3wgyhez for Afterthoughts, and on the right you'll see, right below the click-here-to-order widget, information on how to get a free Kindle app for your computer or iPhone or whatever. (Everything but a Cuisinart!) You download the app, and then anything you buy for Kindle gets magically delivered to your registered device. This should work, as Amazon wants to make it easy; let me know how it goes!

Raquel Furtado Ok, I surrender. Just bought your memories, Mr Block, following the instructions you gave to Pamela. I'll try to read it in my PC. Hope I don´t feel like crying at any passage because this device is not waterproof... you know that once, a Scudder's book felt on the swimming pool. I rescued it and waited till it was dry again (fortunatelly I live in a tropical country, it took one and a half day only) to continue reading, although it was completeley deformed ...

Pamela Thank you - sounds like I need to be on my home computer when I start this process. I have plans with my girlfriends tonight so it will be tomorrow - I'll let you know. Again, thank you very much. -pamela.

Lawrence Block Raquel, I don't think anything I wrote in Afterthoughts is likely to move you to tears. I just hope you find it interesting!

message 10: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence Block Pamela, I believe you're right, and that the app downloads to the computer you're working on. Do let me know how it works out. (I have a Kindle myself, and thus have not had occasion to download an app. Though I suppose I could; that way I'd be able to read on my Mac when I don't have my Kindle with me. Have to think about that...)

message 11: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Hello Mr. Block - I got the kindle for PC - I'm up to the specialist - I must confess it -the kindle AP- is better thank I expected it to be. And your words are great - exactly As expected. (please forgive my grammar and typing - it is so hard to make typing read the way you sound) -thanks for the push- Pamela.

Lawrence Block Pamela, I'm glad to hear the Kindle App works well—and of course I'm delighted to know that you're enjoying Afterthoughts. Thanks for letting me know!
