#UnderTheSoulCovers -- The Nobel Prize Edition: Bob Dylan + Shirley Caesar + Stevie Wonder + Bobby Womackby Mark Anthony Neal | @NewBlackMan | NewBlackMan (in Exile)
My first real introduction to 2016 Nobel Prize Winner Bob Dylan was an award show performance of “Gotta Serve Somebody” -- and then, unaware of his larger legacy, I was most fascinated by the White guy who was trying to take it to Church. That same year Shirley Caesar would cover Dylan’s “...Serve Somebody” -- on one of the many albums from the High Priestess that my mother wore out during my formative years, though still not too sure whether it was professional affirmation or a simple clap-back on Caesar’s part.
My more formal introduction to Dylan would be Stevie Wonder’s 1966 cover of the Dylan classic “Blowin’ in the Wind" -- a song as memorable for Clarence Paul’s backing harmonies -- though it would be year’s still before I heard the story of Sam Cooke writing and recording “A Change is Gonna Come” because he was, in part, embarrassed that the “White Boy” recorded an anthem of the movement first; they both might have been dreaming about a young Mavis.
Cooke’s most famous mentee, the mercurial Bobby Womack would return the favor, in a way, dropping a gem of a version of “All Along the Watchtower” -- Dylan’s nod to the prison industrial complex and Womack's nod to Jimi Hendrix, who als0 covered the song -- that appears during Womack’s most classic period in the early 1970s.
