Dylan

I am a fan of Dylan's early music. It brings back some memories of a much more curious and engaged American generation. It resonates as a quaint time capsule rather than anything I would ever consider as being of lasting value worthy of the Nobel Prize for literature.

Then again, Barack Hussein Obama was nominated for the Peace Prize after being in office for less than one month for no other reason than...

We can blame that one on the politically correct Norwegians who award the Peace Prize.

If this is a vain attempt to make the lit prize fashionable and relevant, I think the Swedish Academy has succeeded in hitting itself in the face with a cream pie.

Do not be surprised if this opens the door for considering television reality series for upcoming prizes. Why not video games? No need to burn books when you can electrify them with pekoral.

Pekoral- Swedish noun - literary pretension.

When considering Mr. Dylan's award, I cannot help but think of Willa Cather and Jorge Luis Borges who were never recognized.

If that makes me a Luddite, at least I am a reasonably well-read Luddite who recognizes pekoral and holds his nose over phony Peace prizes.

David Gustafson Well said, Mr. Cotter.

It is rather sad that the members of the Swedish Academy have fallen victim to the politically correct fashion of chasing after a popular culture in order to bask in the echo of its worthless applause.

Matt I guess it all depends on what you define as literature.

From the Wikipedia article on Literature:
[…] Its Latin root literatura/litteratura (derived itself from littera: letter or handwriting) was used to refer to all written accounts, though contemporary definitions extend the term to include texts that are spoken or sung (oral literature).
[…] The concept has changed meaning over time: nowadays it can broaden to have non-written verbal art forms, and thus it is difficult to agree on its origin, which can be paired with that of language or writing itself.

David Gustafson The NYT PC spank wankers offered up a hilarious op ed today, further mystifying their anointed hero, but stumbling upon a nugget of truth under the predictably instructive rubric, "The Meaning of Bob Dylan's Silence,"

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/26/opi...

The NYT wankers' nugget: "A small group of Swedish critics pretend to be the voice of God, (very unusual for the NYT wankers to capitalize God! The PC censor must have been on a coffee break) and the public pretends that the Nobel winner is literature incarnate."

David Gustafson I find myself wondering if my reaction would have much, much milder had Leonard Cohen had been awarded the Nobel for Lit?

David Gustafson Dylan now claims that he is too busy to drop by Stockholm and pick up his Nobel. At least Leonard Cohen would have had a legitimate excuse since he is only with us in spirit.

David Gustafson The Swedish Academy surprisingly came back to its senses after spending a year in the wastelands with Bob Dylan's drivel (Leonard Cohen would have been okay if you are going with a songwriter-poet) and awarded the Lit Prize to a worthy contender, Kazuo Ishiguro.

Now if someone can speak to those intolerantly correct totalitarians from Norway who awarded the 2009 Peace Prize to Snoop Dogg Barry Obama for no other reason than...

Michael Perkins add these to the list with Borges....
