Something noteworthy about this is how detached from any kind of reality the politics of this are. The Bowles-Simpson plan was well to the left of Obama's proposal, but since Bowles-Simpson wasn't an Obama proposal some Republicans at least said some nice things about it. But once the president made an effort, the whole terms of the debate shifted 'round again.
