Final 2016 Sanderson Lecture + Updates

Brandon’s assistant Adam here. Due to the overwhelming number of people who request for Brandon to work on Oathbringer (Stormlight 3) and nothing else, I asked Brandon if he wouldn’t mind if I took the weekly update posts off his plate to give him more time to devote to the enormous writing endeavor that is the Stormlight Archive. Most of what you see on the website will continue to be written by Brandon, but he gave me leave to periodically post fanart and cosplays across his social media platforms alongside the weekly updates he likes to give to his readers.

The Weekly Update!

The final installment (a catch-all Q&A) of the 2016 Sanderson Lectures is now live! If you missed Episode 11, it was “Dialogue and Agents,” and you can catch up on all the videos here. Enjoy!

In this week’s new Writing Excuses episode, The Editor’s Wish List, Navah Wolfe—an editor at Saga Press—sits down with the Writing Excuses crew to discuss the manuscripts she would like to see.

For those of you who followed Tor.com’s reread for Words of Radiance, which recently reached its conclusion, I have some exciting news for you: The great Alice Arneson just introduced Tor’s reread for Warbreaker, which will begin on Thursday.

Our own Isaac Stewart, cartographer extraordinaire and art director for Brandon, was recently interviewed for the Imaginary World Podcast. This particular episode, Fantasy Maps, talks about the debt modern cartographers owe to J.R.R. Tolkien, who spent decades mapping out Middle-earth on graph paper because everything had to be invented from scratch. It’s a fun podcast and well worth the listen.

Yan Dupasquier "The overwhelming number of people who request for Brandon to work on Oathbringer (Stormlight 3) and nothing else". If that means pressure from the publisher/editors then I guess that's acceptable, but if it's just "normal people" pressuring him through messages and comments, I think it's a disgrace. If Sanderson likes to write blog posts and posting various stuff as a kind of break from writing, he should keep doing so, and people should learn to be patient.
The author is not under any contract with the people, nor should he be under pressure to write 24/7.

I agree, Yan! Especially as Brandon Sanderson is so prolific. He has so many titles going on, and so many good stories he's pushing out all the time. I feel like he's just trying to make sure it's right, and I wouldn't want him to force out a book he's unhappy with because people are complaining :(

Cade i am pretty sure, with all Brandon's books, he has at least one ghost author, either that or he is an insanely fast writer. just look at the size of the books in the stormlight archive!!!

Bridget I vehemently agree with Yan and Jenni!

Brandon is definitely one of my favourite authors ever and I can barely wait for the next book of the stormlight archive. However! I suspect (though I don't know) that what allows him to be so prolific and consistently excellent is the fact that he constantly is able to switch between different types of writing and thinking. So, if he thinks of blogging as a drain on his energies or a wast of time then he should definitely take a break. but if it is helpful as a break, then he should definitely continue! Plus his lectures and other writer support are fantastic, and appreciated (almost) as much as his books are.

JK I vastly prefer the books. But I really really appreciate that he works so much to connect to his fans and support other people thinking of entering the industry.

Cade he does deserve a break, just like everyone else (probably) likes a break from their job
