gelid |ˈjelid|
adjective
icy; extremely cold : the gelid pond | figurative she gave a gelid reply.
ORIGIN early 17th cent.: from Latin gelidus, from gelu ‘frost, intense cold.’
It's a weird little word, perfect for describing the ocean in California. It sounds like "jellied" and makes me think of pickled pig's feet - a cold and jellied dish from the Old Country.
