Q&A Sunday: Down time

It’s the weekend. I love my weekends. I get to do whatever I want, usually! Vicki and Aliana asked…

Aside from spending time with your family, what is your favorite activity when you’re not writing?

I have a lot of things I enjoy. The short list…

Reading

Watching sports

Swimming

Drinking wine (does that count?)

But I do love my job and spending time with my family. I write frequently, and if I’m not writing, I’m usually plotting. It’s fun for me. I don’t feel like it’s work, which makes it enjoyable for me to write.

Of course, my kids are six and eight so a lot of my time is spent with them. My daughter takes gymnastics and my son is currently playing soccer. We’ve also done tee ball, ice skating (which I enjoy with them), swimming, and hockey. I’m sure more will come.

My favorite genre is contemporary romance, but I also read a lot of books about being a better writer, marketing, finances, business, and raising kids. If you put it in a book, I’ll be willing to check it out. I’m a visual person so reading is great for me. I can re-read what I need to and it moves at my pace. I’ve never listened to audio books but I hesitate because I think my mind would wander. It’s also why I don’t like watching videos – I either get distracted or lost!

I’m also a bit of a sports junkie. Fall is great because I love football. Saturdays we watch USC Gamecocks (where both hubby and I graduated) and Sundays we cheer for the Buffalo Bills. We also watch hockey on TV, but prefer to catch other sports in person. Baseball, soccer, lacrosse, just about anything!

Every week I swim with my dad, which is a good chance to spend some time with him. I’d like to swim more than I do, but for now once a week is all I do. But wine… that’s a regular occurrence in my house! It’s also fueling my new series coming next year about a group of siblings who inherit a vineyard. What could be better than wine and romance?

Thanks so much, Vicki and Aliana, for your question! If you have a question, send me an email (mary (at) maryethompson (dot) com) with Q&A in the subject, or post it in the comments below, and I’ll answer your question right here on the blog!
