At the Christian university I attended, a professor presented our class with a troubling assertion: "The God of the Bible does not exist outside of the Bible." He wrote it on the whiteboard, and then asked us what we thought about it. It's fair to say that none of us were sure what he was getting at, until he asked if a totally ignorant person could ever know God apart from the revelation of God that is provided by the Bible. After some fun debate (there's nothing quite like a roomful of cocky amateur theologians looking for an argument) we all had to tap out. Every single one of us admitted that if God's Word--as contained in the Bible--were to disappear from the earth, it would be impossible to discover the knowledge within it by natural revelation or speculation alone.
